For the record, I was most impressed with Ga St (beating middle of the road SEC team), South Alabama (hanging tough with supposedly top 25 team), and App State (beating good FCS by 35 while on auto-pilot) this weekend.

I'm not the one telling people how they should do power rankings.

I'm just pointing out that saying you're going to ignore last season is always self-contradicting, and it doesn't make sense to say "you should use context, but if you use more than me it's not a power ranking".

RE: Week 1 Power Ratings
All congratulations to the Panthers. They came up big for the conference. Huge win, regardless of what Tennessee turns out to be when this season is all said and done. I’m very happy for Coach Elliott who was always one of my favorite App coaches.

However, if you are going to do “PowerRankings” based on a blank slate and the results of one game, you might as well not bother. Its would be meaningless. If this game had happened on week six and GA State was 1-4 going into it, would you still rank them #1?

Power rankings imply not only success on that day, but an expectation that the team has what it takes to continue to perform going forward and to some degree taking into account the results and momentum from past results. Granted that last part does not apply in week one, but does anyone really think the Panthers will continue at that level going forward?

So is this No. 1 in the dumb-thread power rankings right now, or do you need to see more from it going forward?

Man pantheralum is really riled up about not being #1 in every single ranking. He ain't gonna like this one...

Taking into account my final power ranking of 2018, my preseason expectations of every team, and week 1 results (change from last ranking indicated):
1. App State (-) - 2018 champs, dominated bowl game, dominated week 1 opponent
2. Troy (+1) - Easy win against over-matched opponent
3. Georgia Southern (-1) - Pretty pathetic showing, but man LSU may be nasty this year. That spread offense may be a game changer.
4. ULM (+2) - Couldn't tell much vs. Grambling but a win
5. Louisiana (-) - Played Mississippi State close. Levi Lewis looked good. Cajuns should be good this year.
6. Georgia State (+4) - pantheralum will deride me, but you can't go from worst to first...
7. Arkansas State (-2) - Other than GS, most disappointing result of the day
8. Texas State (+1) - Couldn't tell much from A&M game, I still think they take a big step forward
9. South Alabama (-2) - I admittedly had no faith in USA in the preseason, they looked good at times vs. Nebraska, we'll see if they are for real or not soon
10. Coastal (-2) - Looked the worst on TV that I saw. Could be a rough season in Conway.

This one is a head scratcher. I can understand counting last year’s results, but you basically ignored this weeks results.

I love how Texas State lost by 34 points and gained just 8 rushing yards in the game but moved up in your power rankings. I love being a fan! Haha.

Oh, there are no opinions actually pertaining to GSU football that are angering me today. Trust me on that one. Feelin’ pretty good. I can’t emphasize that enough.

Power rankings is just some dumb device made up by the ESPNs and SIs and Bleacher Reports and every other outlet in the world that covers a league. They didn’t exist before that. The point is to be different from, say, your AP poll or even your standings or point total or whatever else. That’s the only thing that makes it fun or worth any value to anyone. Again, I thought people had read enough sports coverage in their lives to understand the spirit with which you put together “power rankings.” Clearly not.

RE: Week 1 Power Ratings
I bet literally everyone has GSU higher in their power rankings than they would in a straight up ranking of who they think is best/how the season will end up, even the people not ranking GSU 1.

I think the people not putting GSU 1 understand the concept more than you know...

For instance, in no way do I think GSU is better than Arkansas State.

You are 100% correct. Enjoy the achievement and don’t let anything or anyone steal your joy!

There's always an argument about what Power Rankings mean.

I think we dealt with this when USA beat Miss State in 2016. Georgia Southern dealt with it a good bit in 14 and 15.

Power Rankings are subjective to the person making the ranking...there's not a standard being followed by the participants in the thread. If there was an agreed to ranking method that was expected to be followed, then yea I could see the reason for not following the format. I agree with those who say you have to count the whole picture and not just one week. ODU last year vs VT proves that as well.

I'm a big fan of the SP+ (formerly S&P+), and for the first 6 weeks of the season it includes data from the previous season, slowly phasing it out until it relies on the current season only. Otherwise you could see huge swings in your rankings that don't really matter until you get more of a look at what each team is doing this year.

I agree, you can’t go from worst to first instantly, but still GA St should be Top 3 for now.
