Love jucos.
Don't have the upside of high school players but they rarely bust unlike high school players. We've had some really good luck bringing in jucos with three to play and that works great.
Just good enough to lose to Louisiana in the de facto West championship game. Mediocrity with good facilities is nice though. As the preiminant program in Arkansas at this time, I'd like to see Arkansas State translate this into some recruiting momentum in SEC Country.
On the road . . . with a late score being the difference . . . check the home/road in this series . . . home losses are few and far between . . . which stAte juco player was to blame? Was it transfer DPOY in SBC Bingham? Was it transfer SBC CPOY Hansen? Was it all-conference transfer Kirk Merritt?
I see where ericsaid is coming from. stAte appears to focus on winning now with transfers and that's a good strategy. I prefer relying on transfers only to fill gaps and building a program where players love the school. It's worked well too.
If football is war, transfers are mercenaries. They only fight because they're getting paid. There's no skin in the fight.
That makes no sense.
Many of our Juco transfers are on campus for 3 years, so not much different than someone out of high school. 2018's Player of the year, defensive player of the year, and newcomer of the year were all Juco guys for us. These guys were leaders of our team. Our team is very cohesive. We only had one single player leave the team in the offseason. I looked at every team in the conference and we were the only one that low. Some teams had double digits in the transfer portal.

If you looked at 247s transfer portal we had 0.
Only transfer I can remember is Willie Jones, but I don't think he ever entered the portal. He just went JUCO. I'm not sure we had a single player enter it. In the midst of a coaching change no less.
stAte showing 2 in there right now.

That's probably because Withers already ran off everybody.
Medley got suspended, tested the transfer portal, but he ended up getting reinstated, so he stayed with the team.

Yeah there's some truth to that. Withers did run off a bunch of guys.
I'll give him credit for flipping the culture at TXST though. Didn't create a winning culture but we have a high character team. Fran didn't leave things quite so pretty for Withers 4 years ago unfortunately. Spav doesn't have the personnel excuses a lot of 1st year head coaches have.
