I guess I'll be the negative one. I really don't like this. I'm a big believer in either starting true freshmen or redshirting them. I think that being half-in/half-out hurts everyone. I still trust our staff to come through the early slate and have a clear starter but I'm a little surprised there isn't clear separation between a 6th year QB and a true freshman.
And I'm sure this would be less of a big deal if it wasn't the third straight year we've gone through this.
Don't the rules now allow us to play a true freshman up to 4 games without burning his redshirt. If that is the case, I think that it gives us some wonderful opportunities and flexibility with how we use Mathis this year. I would, however, hate to burn his redshirt and lose a year of eligibility just to allow him to play (start?) for an average team at best with little hopes of making the playoffs. If, however, this team surprises us and begins to trend toward playoff capable and Mathis can be a key component in getting us over the top, then burning the redshirt would certainly make some sense.
Got to admit that I am a bit concerned that Shon Mitchell is not in the mix at this point as I would have thought that his game would translate well into running the Go Go offense. I sincerely hope that Mathis made the cut at this point because he is really good as opposed to getting the chance only because neither Mitchell or Hefner did enough to excite the coaching staff.

Isn't there a new rule where if someone plays in fewer than X% of games, they can still redshirt the season?

If this team is only average next season will be below average. Look at the roster. I feel like the better chance to win is this year. I also get the feeling Mathis is really good. Not just a fallback.

Dang, only 4% of games? I guess he gets like a quarter and 3 drives throughout the season

RE: Game 1: Lafayette Leopards
Let's not get too worked up by a few paragraphs in the Daily Press or worry about this year versus next year. London/Marion have a VERY different approach to recruiting than Laycock and when you see how they are setting up the team, it is all about speed and not size on offense. I think we will see many of the true freshmen this year and not just for four games. Same with next year. The offense couldn't be more different than what Mangas was running. The only film anyone has is from Howard, and our players are better than theirs man over man. On defense, I want to see more gambling, blitzing, etc.

Donavyn Lester seems like a fun candidate for this.

Game 1: Lafayette Leopards
From the other thread. The thought is that the Lafayette game is on CAA TV since it isn't a Flo exclusive game. Hopefully this means it's up.

The rest should be on CAA.TV as well.

Per the schedule above, only 7 Tribe games will be Flo streaming exclusive: Colgate, Villanova, JMU, Maine, Elon, Rhode Island, Towson. The remaining home and road conference games: Lafayette, Albany, and Richmond should be on CAA.TV too in additon to Flo

This is something I wanted to clarify: if they're Flo exclusive, I assume that means for any OOC FCS games (Colgate), those fans would be completely unable to watch their team play (without a Flo subscription).
If so, I'd be pretty mad to be on the other side of this. It also makes it so there are less eyeballs on the games themselves, if the other fanbase can't even watch.

It's possible that Colgate has some sort of local rights agreement for their games. Your point is well taken for out of town fans. They are likely S-O-L.

RE: Game 1: Lafayette Leopards
Still going to be a little weird, for the first couple home games, anyway, not hearing Jay Colley during tailgates.
With the new emphasis on the Flo broadcasts, we will have separate teams for TV and Radio broadcasts this season.
Jay & Mike will do all the TV games, while Andrew Phillips and a color commentator will do the radio side. (that's the way most schools have now gone, using split squads.)
So, Andrew (WBB broadcaster for the past few years), will be the voice you hear on the way into the stadium and on your way home.
Jay, I believe, will still do radio on the away games.

RE: Game 1: Lafayette Leopards
A couple of notes from Jay's Game Week 1 interviews:
London would not announce the QB starter until gametime, but it will be, either, Anderson or Mathis. "We will play our best players." First home opener in nine years.
Crist reiterated Marion's emphasis that we ARE a running team, with occasional downfield shots. I think that, maybe, supports why Mitchell is not in the top two, if we utilize the QB's legs as part of that. Crist will finish in the spring OR fall next year, so, leaves the question of his being here next year, since he stated his plans were to apply for the Secret Service.
Fowler mentioned he would finish his major in the spring, though he is starting a minor now. Have to wonder if that means he may have credits to graduate in three years, and whether he will still be here for his 4th year of eligibility?
With the circumstances surrounding Nate's death, it will be interesting to see how he may be honored this season (patch?), and if the team is able to use it for motivation, as Maine did last year in their surprise run through the league and post season.

Believe it was stated at the spring game that there will be a decal on the back of the helmet, honoring Nate.

I would have thought that was a point in favor of Mitchell.

Game 1: Lafayette Leopards
Game notes finally came out with the dreaded "triple OR" at QB. Looks like Hefter is in the mix too.
Also I love Lester at FB. That's going to be a fun backfield.
