Beer Sales
What's the deal, brews or not?

The argument against beer sales for BB at Freedom Hall, is a law that prohibits sale of alcohol because of the close proximity of schools.

ETSU has been given permission to sell beer at Greene Stadium. While other universities, UT, APPY STATE and many others, have announced they will sell beer, nothing has been forthcoming from ETSU.

What is the problem?

Sure would be nice to have a cold one on a hot afternoon at Greene Stadium.

Looks like they may have to wait until next year to catch up with the other schools. If we were going to have beer sales in the stadium it should have come out by now.

So it's ok for the Skybox fans to have access to beer and wine but not the fan in the stands? Didn't have any delay or problem figuring it out for the big donors.

They should sale beer at every game. They are losing a killing by not doing it.

How much money, since that drives the bus? If 7,000 fans bought two beers each, how much revenue? Wasn’t alcohol banned at SEC football games years back because of various problems? At Neyland, will there be alcohol and non-alcohol sections like NASCAR used to divide em up? There was nothing like a NASCAR drunk back in the day, especially when leaving the race.

We are an alcohol crazed society. While I won't be alive to see it, if this movement continues America will shift from nicotine/tobacco impact on lungs and the cardiovascular system as a public health problem to ethanol's impact on the liver as the next generation's public health problem.

Plus, is there any thought going into legalization of marijuana with relation to health implications of smoking it? Never smoked pot, but from what I see, one must deep inhale into the lungs for desired affect. Maybe some pot smokers could clarity this. Growing up in RJ Reynolds country, the massive emphasis placed on stopping tobacco smoking and the banning of it from most public places while marketing alcohol use to the extreme, and now legalizing pot, seems most hypocritical to me. Of course, drug usage, especially opioid abuse, is evolving into a national health epidemic if not already so.

But, back to selling beer and wine at college football games after fans have tailgated prior to the game? Why not sell it to the tailgaters in the tailgating areas — working with your local distributors for as much university profit as possible? Could even have drinking and non-drinking tailgating areas for family, et al sensitivity.

RE: Beet Sales
For a university of our size, I don't see it as much of a revenue maker. No way 7,000 people (our entire stadium) will buy alcohol if it were offered. Maybe 500? I just don't see the revenue as being worth the hassle unless we get someone to be the "official beer" of ETSU for the privilege of setting up at the tailgating area. Dr. Noland cares a lot about liability, I am not sure he would go for such a thing. You also have to consider the possibility of turning off enough people to offset any profits you make.

RE: Beet Sales
When I saw this thread, and it said beet sales, I was confused. Are we going to sell beets at the games?? Lol. I don't like beets all that much....

I'm all for having the beer at the games. I was on a committee here on campus and strongly suggested we have beer at the games. At that time, in 2015, there were 22 universities serving beer at football games, which included several smaller FBS schools, such as Troy, LA-Monroe, Lafayette, etc. Based on their location, and that they were in the "shadow" of the bigger universities in their state, it seemed to make sense to entice people to come to their games. However, it didn't turn out as big as a moneymaker as they thought it might be because of some increases in security, etc. On the other hand, I believe most of them kept it and it didn't cost them in the end because it did help attendance. In other words, they broke even on the venture.

Obviously, you may want some info on this and I don't have time at the moment to provide all of it, but there's info out there on the subject. ETSU has a couple of advantages. One, Axis Security I believe is owned by an alumni, so maybe they can work with ETSU on costs. Second, you could serve JC Beer in the stadium. Maybe not exclusively, but you could have JCBC, JRH, Great Oak, and Watauga (eventually) all available. That would get them involved, and you might save a little $$ that way. I like the idea, and I do research on addiction.

I think what's important to keep in mind is the reality of the situation. Often what people do, and I see this at every game I go to, is that people drink beer in the parking lot and sneak liquor into the game. It's not difficult, it's not like ETSU has drug sniffing dogs at the gates! This results in people actually getting drunk at the game. Thus, I actually think having beer @ the game will ironically help to control the situation, not make it worse. However, we haven't had really bad alcohol related problems at our games thus far.

Regardless, I'm in favor, but I doubt it will happen right away -- maybe next year.

The fans who get drunk do it before they enter the gates. They don't do it at $7/can.

Beer was sold at the App State game. I didn't sense any issues from what I saw. It was sold at the game at BMS. Again, I didn't observe any issues. I personally don't drink, but I understand people do.

What should be factored into the equation isn't just "how many beers would we sell?" It's also about making it an event people want to pay to enter. IMO, alcohol sales make ETSU football more attractive to casual fans.

Bring back Prohibition and let JC and ETSU sporting events recapture the glory days of Little Chicago.

Maybe Saban should give them a non-cooled six-pack, a bag of ice, a cooler, and a bag of pretzels on their way out if they’ll stay until the last 5 minutes. He certainly can afford it.

That's ridiculous. Shades of mubar. What does one expect when one schedules UL-L, New Mexico St., etc. in mid-afternoon in Tuscaloosa in early Sept.? Zero sympathy, and it actually makes me think less of Saban.

Saban is not responsible or sets the start times for the game. That is done by tv networks and the league office.

U of A *chooses* to be dictated to. They have the right, power, etc., to play whenever they want (as long as it's ok with UL-L, etc.). It may be 'inconvenient', or whatever, but their market power should carry a LOT of weight. That said, they don't have to have their games televised. If they're going to be 'played' by the league office and/or the networks (which is really what it's all about), then they shouldn't be surprised if students are leaving blowouts to keep from getting heat stroke.
Zero sympathy. At worst............a coach and staff should just accept that as "part of the deal".

Maybe Saban should start a fund raising campaign to “roof in” the stadium, wi-fi the place, and turn down the thermostats for a “more comfortable and inviting” game day experience for his “beloved” student body so they could party during the second half of the blow-outs. Ha, Ha.
