It is a bit odd, but I can see it as a token gesture for those who are getting free rides to give back to the athletes like baseball or swimming that may only get books or a partial scholarship. All that said, it still seems weird.

"Give back" and "be grateful"? What a joke. All those players do is give to their university. The school hands out a few scholarships to the kids that drive the most powerful source of value for the school, and they're expected to be grateful and pay their way? **** that.
