I don’t really know the situation but could it be possible that when Gilbert got to ECU there was far less to do in regards to framework so he could skip to page 5 so to speak? That might explain the difference.

RE: Jon Gilbert tenure @ USM
I hope Gilbert is a good fit and it works out well for ECU. I am an old Eagle alum and I have a great deal of respect for ECU.
I enjoyed many a USM/ECU battle and I am sad we don't play anymore. Gilbert just wasn't a good fit at USM. He was not respected by most that worked with him. That said, he could be a great fit at ECU and be respected by those that he works with at ECU. We have an AD now in McClain that understands USM and is a great fit for us. Hopefully both ECU and USM won when Gilbert left for ECU. Best of luck this season for your football team.

Southern Miss has made more progress in the last week than in the entire tenure of Gilbert. One area Gilbert refused to attack, the other he woulndt try.

The problem with this thought is that Gilbert spent almost his entire tenure here trying to "understand the landscape" to construct a plan for the future. It's like he was buying time to get out.

This.

McClain came in ready to get shlt done. He didn't need to conduct surveys or go on camping trips. He saw immediate areas that needed attention and went to work.

Stolen from SouthernMiss09 and Polymer Eagle on one of our boards . . .

During Gilbert's time (22 months) at Southern Miss:
* attended a really odd retreat type thingy
* had the stadium pressure washed
* stopped all freebie and charity tickets
* sent a bunch of really weird communications to the fan base

Since McClain got here in April (4.5 months):
* Jay Ladner hired as BB coach
* Spoon rehired as assistant
* The announcement of new turf for the Pete
* Travis Creel and Ladd Rhodes added to the baseball staff
* Continued support from KLLM providing the Southern Miss equipment tractor-trailer
* Brian Levin hired as softball coach
* Refillable Southern Miss mugs
* The band moved next to the student section
* A big increase in Southern Miss social media
* #30K5TIMES
* UNITE HATTIESBURG BUSINESS PACKAGE
* The announcement of the Family Fun Zone at the Rock
* A partnership with @INFLCR
* Ensuring that the Pride will be in Starkville
* The announcement of Eagle Club bus trips to Starkville, Tuscaloosa and Ruston
* Freshman pep rally and unfurling of a new banner
* New signage on the video board at the Rock
* New banners for Eagle Walk
* The announcement of beer and light wine sales in the Rock
* Lower concession prices
* Students will be able to purchase food in the stadium through the Grubhub App
* SEATZ App for purchases in the Rock
* More pressure washing at the Rock

I’m certainly more happy with McClain, but Gilbert also got the Adidas contract, new sound system at Rock, broke ground on new volleyball facility, and maybe started the beach volleyball team.

Hart and his 3 decades of experience as AD at ECU, Florida State, Tennessee and Alabama are still at use and is on the payroll to help Gilbert with a vest interest in seeing him succeed as it's part of his legacy here. Gilbert likely trust him enough to take his advice too with their relationship. This is probably something Compher never did when Holland was still on the payroll and a paid resource.

Which is why i'm going to hold off judgement on Gilbert. Let's see what he accomplishes once Hart is gone. A lot has gone right of ECU in the last year, Dooley, Houston, facility upgrades. All of which were in place or were in negotiations before Gilbert came on board. So we'll see how good he is or isn't once Hart is gone.

Also just announced that the Jeff Bower Center for Academic Excellence is underway and will be opened to athletics in March 2020.

I think that is a legit thought. So we'll see what we see once Hart gets off the payroll.

I believe the writing was on the wall and he knew it. He was able to escape before he got fired. Pretty simple.
