Regardless of whether athletes go hungry or not, it is ridonculous for any university to compel its athletes to contribute to the athletic foundation.

RE: UL Tells Players To Be Athletic Donors
Non-P5 schools need to be better at getting their athletic alumni to donate and be more involved.

Well, as with everyone at all schools, it depends on how much success someone has. If a history or marketing student graduates from Michigan State and ends up making $12 an hour delivering pizzas, he's not going to be in a position to donate to the university and probably doesn't think his time spent there was well spent. If he ends up making six or seven figures as a successful manager, lawyer, doctor, etc., then yes, the university has to make sure it is tapping him for money and probably won't have trouble doing so.
Similarly, if a football player graduates from UL - Monroe and does not have a professional career, he's probably not in position to give a lot. If he ends up making $10 million a year from the Los Angeles Rams or Denver Nuggets, then that's a different story.

QUO why me? Where did I say that athletes should be compelled to donate to the athletic foundation? I agree that is absolutely ridiculous. I just responded to Wedge's post about athletes not being able to afford a late night pizza.

Starting with the beginning of this school year, all scholarship UL football players will be encouraged to be a minimal level $50 member of the Ragin' Cajun Athletic Foundation. The move will be optional for walk-on members of the squad.
How can it be both a "team rule" but also that players are "encouraged" to do it? Never seen anything like this before.
Shouldn't the pound of flesh that they pay in student athletic fees be enough?
There are no student athletic fees.

They get full cost of allowance at UL. Off campus athletes get close to $1900 per month and on campus athletes get $900 per month. So $50 isn’t a whole lot for the yer. Also this wasn’t mandated by the coaching staff it was a team decision and an investment agreed upon by the players.

I for a split second thought this was Louisville.
This just sounds like bad communication at a morning meeting. It's much ado about nothing, really.

Napier’s Statements After Backlash
More mealy-mouthed blather from Napier. Bottom line is this was never 'voluntary', it wasn't an athlete-initiative, it was dreamed up by the coaches and imposed on the athletes, and it was clear that significant social pressure was going to be applied to enforce it.
And his talk about "appreciating all the people" who make football possible was nonsense, because the $50 (minimum!) donation was for the athletics department, not the "academic side", which is where it should go if it really was about showing appreciation to the broader university community, especially the regular students who I bet are soaked with high mandatory fees to pay for athletics at ULL.
This was a big PR disaster for ULL, and deservedly so.

How much is his coaching salary? It sounds like ULL may be in FCS in the next decade.

When your in charge of people, you don't ask them to do something that you don't do.
If coaching staff & athletic dept employees are donating money
These kids aren't dummies, they know how the system works
It's dollar wk, some kids can afford it, coach said he back anybody up who can't.
I don't see any different than union dues, buying tools for your job
You invest in you jop with clothes, car, computer
