Herd is plural. Wolfpack is plural. Irish in that context is plural.

You'd probably have to ask people who were around 80 years ago to answer that question. OU is a U of O, but they do the same as we do. Plus around Oklahoma, UT means Texas. And nobody likes them.

No, not in the sense of units. you have A herd. A wolfpack. But you would have SOME Illini. Not AN Illini. It's like how people have no concept of the word Alumnus and its plurals and forms. Alumnus is singular, Alumni is plural. You would have AN Illinoisan, or SOME Illini.
