I’m not 100% sure, but pretty sure they said a few weeks back that Mateo Jackson was injured.

From Madia's August 5th Field Notes:
"The first-year coach also said sophomore linebacker Mateo Jackson, “is out for a while.” Jackson had a brace on his wrist during practice on Friday and Monday."

That confirms what I was concerned about earlier. Too bad. He was both big and experienced,. Now that Maginley has been shifted to DE, we have no reserve LBs w/ both of those attributes. The others would be FBS strong safeties. Does explain the run defense problems during the last scrimmage though.

Yeah, I think the starting front 7 has the potential to be one of the best ever. But damn it seems thin as far as depth..

RE: 2019 Football Training Camp Thread
Boise state has lost four players the past few days to transfer.
I’ve read of other schools losing guys too.
Used to be it happened a lot after spring practice, now it seems like more and more kids are assessing their role at end of fall camp and leaving before school starts.
Pretty sad that all these kids just bolt when they aren’t guaranteed starting or minimum amount of playing time.
Will probably only get worse.

NCAA used to rule transfers with an iron fist, now they’ve gone so soft and permit instant eligibility to almost everyone that it’s turned into free agency. Especially with b-ball, between high school, prep school, college and JUCO some of these kids can be in 5 schools in 5 years.

I have no issue with transfers but NCAA needs to enforce sitting out a year if not moving down a level.

Pumped after listening to the Oneils press conference. wow.
Few Highlights (from conference and 2 deep just released:
-Stapleton and Drew Painter listed as the tight ends in 2 deep - no Cheatham or Carlton. Called Stapleton most consistent guy since Spring.
-Highlighted Devin Ravenel as having a tremndous camp (listed behind Jake Brown on 2 deep)
-Says you could drop Austin Douglass at LSU and he wouldnt be worried about the moment being too big. High praise for the freshman RB.
-Jalen Green/Bryce Maginely on 2 deep at Defensive End.
-Wesley McCormick starting opposite Rashad Robinson.
-Brandon Polk returning kicks

Thought Cigs presser comments around the RB rotation were interesting. We’re officially 4 deep there, and it sounds possible they could all play. Either they haven’t finalized the rotation or don’t want to show their hand though - he left things a bit open ended.

From previous pressers, Percy was called the "clear #1" RB who should get the "majority" of carries. I'm guessing the others will get some work too.
Polk returning kicks is no surprise. Looking for big things from him. I hope Cig has a reverse or two up his sleeve.

I took his comments to mean more like he likes all of his RBs and would like to do what is possible (from Montgomery) to get them out there. I don't think it's any slight to Percy and I do think he'll get the majority of touches. I think he really likes this group and has a lot of belief in them and their abilities.
A big takeaway I got from the presser is how emphatic he was in his confidence in this team. He didn't seem at all worried about their preparedness or their ability to execute. Early in the camps he seemed a little concerned about some of that, but they seem to have had some strong camps. I love the confidence he has in his players and I do think that will carry over to the field.
This is going to be a looooooong week!

I personally prefer having a clear lead #1 at RB who can be a work-horse and get a majority of the carries. I think the last two seasons the running game suffered for 2 main reasons (poor run blocking) and making a concerted effort to share carries. It seemed like the way they were shuffled none of them ever really got the opportunity to get in a flow.

Especially when all three of them were similar running backs. It was not a situation where each back brought something completely different to the table to change the pace up. I think the combo of Percy hammering on the defense mixed in with hamilton's quickness is going to be fun to watch

i'm a little concerned that Gillespie "may" be the starting LT again. looks like he and Bethea are an either/or listing on the 2-deep. i'm sure he's a good athlete but i saw him get pushed around too much last year. he's listed at 6-6, 275 lbs. i get that big does not equal better, but i just remember him getting pushed around a bunch last year. that needs to change at that spot, we need that spot to be improved, whether it's Gillespie or Bethea.

3 years I've been waiting for Gillespie to gain weight more in line w/ being a Div I left tackle. It hasn't happened. He seems too fit to be an O- lineman. But I will trust Wrobo's judgement. Wonder if we could use him on a tackle eligible play perhaps this season? Bet he could pull it off.

For Dylan Stapleton to get the starting nod he must be doing really well. It wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility if he stayed healthy & the #1 TE, he made 1st, 2nd, or 3rd team All CAA. Granted going use up to 4 TEs with a lot of 2 TE sets, but they should also get a lot more balls thrown their way with lots of play action.
Riley, once he comes back from the 3 game suspension, if he stays healthy, will be All CAA, likely 1st or 2nd team (Last season was pre season All CAA/ended up 2nd team). A 6'5"/230 lb WR is big even for top level P5.
Trivia question: when was the last time JMU had 2 brothers start, AND both make All CAA? Would that be a 1st?

Cheatham's stock has really fallen. And what gives w/ Carlton? He had some good speed at the position. Guessing, effective run blocking is not those guy's strongpoints.

I suspect Bethea will win that position and be the guy. I agree with what was said, Gillespie just seems to get pushed around too much when isolated.
