That's pretty unbelievable, and $100 mil more than their current endowment balance.

Good for them. Happy to see a school that isn't always given it's due value-wise get a donation that size.

RE: Western Michigan University receives $550 donation.
This is an insane amount of money...that basically increases their annual University operating budget by 25% each of the next ten years. I wonder if these are the same "anonymous donors" who started the Kalamazoo Promise up there (crazy program if you want to read about it...might even make you want to move to Kalamazoo lol). Kazoo has three BIG money families up there, all valued at multiple Billions, the Devos Family ($7.4B and yes, those Devoses), the Kellogg Family ($10.B and yes, you know...cereals galore), and the Stryker Family ($14.8B...the originators of Stryker Corporation, who essentially has built every hospital bed in the US and a huge market share of the prosthetics currently used). Lots of people don't realize it, but Kazoo is one of the "richer" cities in America when you stretch capital controlled by the city's population over the size of the city and account for cost of living. For those counting, that's a 1 billionaire for every 100,000 citizens.

the google says WMU has an operating budget of $345 million and change so $55 million per year would be just under 16% of their budget
plus the story says the money goes to their foundation so it will most likely go into a long term endowment and not be spent each year over the next 10 years, but instead invested with a 4.5% to 5% payout for the very long term future (if not basically "forever")
