Some context:

Rio Grande City to South Padre Island 125 miles

Rio Grande City to Harlingen 75 miles

Brownsville to Harlingen. 25 miles

Edinburg to Harlingen 40 miles

These are campuses far from each other and very few students live on campus. It's a bunch of commuter campuses. They dont have a stadium in the valley period that can host FBS football. And it's not San Antonio. It's not not an urban area with a bunch of students that didn't grow up as UT fans. On top of that, what alumni base are they hitting up for dollars? They do not have $11M a year to spend.

The Valley has a huge lack of entertainment options. There's just not a ton to do down there. I spent about 2 weeks in McAllen for work about 5 years ago and spent most of my nights at an Applebee's...
People in that area will go to HS football games rather UTRGV. You see MCallen and PSJA t-shirts sold in Walmart and convenience stores. Have never seen anything related UT PanAm or UTRGV in 20 years.

You may be right, but I don't think what you wrote above proves that.

If they're supportive of HS football they could be supportive of D1 football too. Never saw any UTSA gear in stores around San Antonio either until they started their football program.

utsa is the only game in the 7th largest city in the country. they have a lot of under served sports fans to draw from. the folks in the valley have fewer dollars to allocate for entertainment.

They used to be . .. University of the Incarnate Word also sports a football team.

but they are a tiny school that does not play fbs football. I think Tom Benson gave them the money to start football.

They're in The Southland Conference. They had a pretty good year last season, expected to be even better this year.

UTRGV would plan to play in the new Rio Grande Valley Toros soccer stadium in Edinburg, which is in the USL and the minor league affiliate of the MLS’s Houston Dynamo.

The stadium seats almost 10,000 and there are tentative plans to expand it to over 20,000.

Brownsville-Harlingen has 415 k and McAllen-Edinburg-Mission has over 500 k. But they are far from wealthy.
