RE: Transfer Portal
That’s the risk the players take when they declare for the transfer portal. They won’t always find something better. Sometimes they might not find anything. Hopefully current players see this and it helps stem the flow of our players that want to declare for the transfer portal.

It's astounding, as none of these guys appear to be "retiring" or focusing on academics. These are legit transfers to nowhere. I hate it for them, but that's the risk you take. I'm sure some of them will end up back at the school they "left" but I'd assume a large majority of them will not be welcomed back.

This is true for USA under Coach Campbell.

RE: Transfer Portal
Most of the Troy basketball players that went in the portal after Cross was hired wound up getting no interest.

Of the 4 that left the team, only one received another D1 offer (Javan Johnson to Iowa State). Of the other 3, one had to go to JUCO after getting no D1/DII offers, and two others are still sitting at home with no basketball offers at all.

That may also be a sign of just how bad of a recruiter/player developer Cunningham was.

RE: Transfer Portal
They don't have to quit the team to enter the portal, I thought? They could all return and play for the squad while in the portal.

They have to be released for other teams to actively contact them.

RE: Transfer Portal
FWIW, GS's running back Andrew Cunningham was allowed to rejoin the team. I guess he didn't get the offer he was hoping for.

A couple of our guys from the portal went to jucos and one transfered to Campbell. We've also had one defensive lineman and one receiver leave that I've heard nothing about.

Setting a bad precedent letting kids return from the portal

Team agreed to it and he had stipulations he had to meet to be accepted back.

If the team makes the call, who are we to say any different?

Agreed. Should be viewed on a case by case basis.

That's the old rule. The portal changed all that:

"The Division I Council adopted a proposal this week that creates a new “notification-of-transfer” model. This new system allows a student to inform his or her current school of a desire to transfer, then requires that school to enter the student’s name into a national transfer database within two business days. Once the student-athlete’s name is in the database, other coaches are free to contact that individual."

Ah ok, my mistake. So they're technically still on the team, but the coach can certainly release them if they have given their indication to transfer.

Exactly. The original coach is not obligated to hold a scholarship or roster spot for them.
