Chris Zorich Leaves

This isn’t good. Zorich jumped on board last summer and was supposed to be the guy with connections who’d keep the AD afloat.

Sadly, this seems to be on par for Chicago State.

Yeah, given his twitter enthusiasm as recently as two days ago, it’s looking like the school got rid of him. I really don’t understand that at all. Zorich is a big name here and as good as it gets given the situation.

The way the Administration acts, you'd think they were trying to kill the Athletic department.

RE: Chris Zorich Leaves
I imagine a conversation something like this between him and the CSU President:

CZ: To do better in basketball than 3-28 (M) and 2-28 (W), we will need more financial resources.
Pres: You'll have to do more with less.
CZ: We have the 2nd lowest D1 budget in the nation. Our budget ($5M) is our 1/3rd the average of other 1 AAA institutions ($15M). Only Coppin State is below us.
Pres: You'll just have to do more.
CZ: But how can we improve without more resources??
Pres: Umm...Chris...that's not really a priority around here.
CZ: ..... I'll get my hat.

RE: Chris Zorich Leaves
Actually, I think I nailed it:
from https://chicagocrusader.com/zorich-out-a...rthcoming/

"But several sources at CSU tell the Crusader Zorich grew frustrated with the lack of support from CSU administrators and a “culture of ignorance” on how athletics at a Division I institution should operate. Privately, Zorich complained about the University’s lack of providing him with the money to hire additional athletic trainers. CSU has one athletic trainer that must care for all the athletes at the University. When teams go on road games, CSU does not have a trainer that can travel with the team."

They have hired a second athletic trainer as well as a compliance director. Men’s golf coach has finally been hired. Director of VB Operations too. The department is finally hiring some folks, but it is disheartening to see Zorich our without knowing the full story. I truly hope it’s to find someone to enhance the athletic department with plans to maintain D1 status.

This is a school who collected only $47,460 in ticket sales for all sports since 2010, and except for one massive $96K donation collected only $10,115 in donations otherwise over that time frame.

Saw this mentioned on another board is this true?

An athletic director does not make decisions whether a department should be in Division I. That’s a university president’s call to make.

Historically we have seen an AD steer the ship as we did when New Orleans athletic administration held off a disastrous D3 move for a somewhat better D2 move, only for a new administration to come in and say they are staying D1.

However - Chicago State seems to be in a worse position than that as there’s no Div I league that makes sense geographically and would be willing to take them as the Southland did for New Orleans when they left the Sun Belt. CSU is throwing a lot of money at travel in the WAC and they can barely afford D1 as is

Yes, but hiring an AD who feels they’re better off as a D3 school than D1 would certainly not help in the case to stay D1. And that’s the point.
The president isn’t going anywhere, but at least a new AD with hopefully a vision is. That AD could help influence a decision from the president in that the University wants to be excellent in all facets, including the student-athlete experience.

I haven’t seen that, but I’d say they’ve collected more than that amount; however, that could be the net profit after expenses. Regarding donations— I wouldn’t be surprised honestly. The university has been poor in promoting itself. Rarely during the last decade have I seen them push/market for donations or promotor season ticket packages. Heck, they don’t even have a link to donate to the athletic department on their website. You have to earmark it through CSU’s own school site.

That’s where a leader of the athletic department with a sense of business would be a huge difference. There are so many little things on their website and social media accounts that would benefit the school.
