The issue is definitely a two edged sword. Considering Cincy's tough conference schedule this year, could UC and UCF both lose a couple to quality AAC opponents and watch an undefeated MAC school in the access bowl? That doesn't seem like a positive development for the American.
This is yet another example of a system rigged against the G5. Unfortunately, what we're really discussing is trying to find a way to "game the system" so to speak.
Whos made the Access Bowl outside of the AAC? What would necessarily change? Hell, the AAC champ could go undefeated. UCF did just that.
2014: Boise State
2015: Houston
2016: Western Michigan
2017: UCF
2018: UCF
So we're at a 60% hit rate.
But the trend is moving to the American. Big news today is that it looks like Boise State vs Florida State will be played this weekend and moved to the home field of FSU instead of Jacksonville. Canceled games equals inside track for Boise. Loss eliminates them while a win puts them second behind UCF.
I think you're vastly overestimating what a loss would do. Remember, MWC had three teams ranked in the end of season poll (Boise, Fresno, and Utah State) all who had at least 2 losses. If any of those teams only had 1 loss, there likely would've been a tougher discussion than what was had. UCF clearly would've been in as an undefeated team, but a one-loss MWC champ vs. a one-loss AAC champ is an extremely interesting discussion. I'd just rather that discussion not be necessary

The Fighting Boiseberries have an easy schedule after FSU and UC nemesis Willie Taggert. Boise St doesn't play two really good MW teams: SDS and Fresno State. If Bearcats and Boise can both go 11-1; I would pick UC for the Cotton Bowl. If Bearcats can go 13-0, OK OK; UC has the size, skill positions and a better QB than tOSU. Small quick WRs like Tucker and Jackson are problems to tOSU.
If Bearcats can go 13-0, they are the only G5 team that can play in the championship playoffs. If any other G5 team goes unbeaten, including UCF, then they aren't going to the championships.
If its a pod system, divisions, or just a 11 team conference, the Bearcats can play only 8 of the 10 AAC teams. I think Coach Fick is behind the scheduling of G5 teams. It says two things: he is confident with his team and he wants to stay at least 10 years. Then he would like to coach the Bengals. His best friend in the coaching is Titans HC Mike Vrabel.
I don't know anybody in the Fickell family, but I did read CF's book:
Hog Mollies and the Pickle Pie Party.
