Yeah I think they are in a spot that fits where they are as a school and city.

Not so sure. Valdosta > Statesboro in both size and population and yet Statesboro has an FBS school while Valdosta has a D2 school. You can argue that Savannah props up Statesboro, but it really doesn’t. GS is of course way bigger than VSU, but it’s irrelevant because Valdosta is still larger than some FCS schools, which is where they should be.

VSUs problem is that they haven’t cared at all to create any kind of brand in their own city. They use Valdosta High schools football stadium because it’s basically on VSUs campus now and VHS wont sell it to them. Valdosta has the population to support FCS football. Both major high schools in the city average good attendance and when they play each other there easily could be 15k+ if there was a stadium to support it. As it stands, both high schools average more in attendance than VSU. That’s a VSU problem, not a location problem.

1. Texas
2. Texas A&M
3. Texas Tech
4. TCU
5. Houston
6. Baylor
7. UNT
8. SMU
9. Texas State
10. Rice
11. UTSA
12. UTEP

I would rank them like this. If we beat SMU in football this year, I think we move up a spot. UNT has made a big jump in my mind from their recent football success.

I guess I am actually thinking more in lines with perception of athletic strength than any quantifiable results. I think FBS football automatically puts you in front of every other D1 school in the state of Texas. Recent success in Football sways my opinion more than anything else. Next I consider success in Men's basketball and baseball. Then I consider fan base presence. I still feel like my initial ranking is how I would rank them.

We should be much higher, but our football is holding us back. Fix that and everything else falls in place.

Do the Longhorns make it on Texans' lists as number one because Bevo's brand is the most recognized or you really believe they still can win over all others across the board in your state? Honestly, here in South Carolina, Austin's golden child has lost its luster completely, going back to Mack Brown, Augie Garrido, and Rick Barnes departing; and with the Big XII taking hits reputation wise as being watered down post-Nebraska, Mizzou, and Texas A&M (I'd say it ranks near the bottom of the Power 5's with PAC-12) I would not have them even in the top 3 as Texas Tech and TCU seem to command just as much respect as peer schools now. I'm sure they have the most money in their burnt orange coffers but empires historically fall when adversaries continue to encroach on what's perceived as well established territory in a region occupied by complacent or dysfunctional inhabitants and the Aggies, Houston, North Texas, etc., just seem to have the stronger pulse in football which ultimately drives perception that the times indeed are a-changing in the "Lonestar Network" of dominance...

RE: Where would you rank your sports teams with other schools in state?
As much as I hate them:
Football is on the rise, they're likely gonna be top 15, if not top 10, in the preseason.
Basketball won the NIT this year.
Baseball is the one sport they're really down in right now.

Looking at all sports they probably are still #1 right now:
Men's Tennis won the national championship this year.
They've won like 4 straight swimming and diving national championships.
Volleyball has a natty this decade and almost always a top 5 program.
Was only 14 years ago they won their last football natty, and played for another 10 years ago. Baseball won it that same year.

Since 2000 they have national championships in football, baseball, volleyball, men's golf, men's swimming and diving, men's tennis, women's outdoor T&F, and women's indoor T&F.

A&M is probably the only other school in the state on their stratosphere right now but the gap is certainly narrowing between UT/A&M and Tech/Baylor/TCU/UH/etc. I think. But there's still a gap.

Let me reiterate that I can't stand UT, just for the record.

RE: Where would you rank your sports teams with other schools in state?
UT has definitely lost ground to A&M in recent years due to their lack of football dominance. However, they are still the flagship program in Texas. Largest fan following, more alumni, more money, more brand recognition, just overall perception. Texas Tech just doesn't have the following, notoriety, or location to be ranked above UT or A&M. Their most recent season is actually the only reason I had them high on my list. if they hadn't done so well in Basketball and Baseball, I would have had them below TCU and Houston. I usually think of Baylor and TCU as being pretty equal. Baylor with their recent scandal and lack of football success since then dropped them for me. No body really wants to talk about them since the scandal. I feel like they have been shunned in a way.

UH has had success in Basketball and Baseball recently, football in the past few years, and outside of the P5 they are the largest school perception wise in my mind. Then you have SMU who benefits from their history and rich alumni in my mind. They have name brand recognition in Texas even though though haven't been great in anything recently. UNT has been good in Football which elevates them, otherwise they would be MUCH lower in my mind.

We just don't have success in Football. The single biggest factor in where I ranked us. We have name brand recognition in Texas and have made some headlines recently due to success in Basketball, Baseball, and Volleyball. Still haven't made it into post season with the exception of Volleyball. We have the fan base and representation in all major metro areas in Texas, but our fan base is fickle and wants a winner in football.

Everyone else below us, is struggling in all areas. Fan base, perception, success in sports, etc.

Again, just my thoughts and how I perceive things based on who I interact with and what I see on social media and news sites.

Why do you perceive the Green Wave to be the 2nd ranked Louisiana school? They must have a brand recognition in the state and field competitive teams I'm not aware of. I'd move Grambling Tigers up many spots due to the championships they've won and the fact that more than 200 of their players have gone on to the professional football level which is amazing for a small school like that...

I put it in 3 tiers

1st tier
1.LSU

2nd Tier- All have different attributes overall I think we have the best sports teams, and best fan following overall, best football team goes to LaTech, and perception wise and academics is Tulane. When it comes to Academics they are ahead of LSU, which is the main reason why they are in the American. ULM is behind all three .

2.Louisiana
3.LaTech
4.Tulane
5. ULM

3rd Tier
6. McNeese
7. SELA
8. Grambling
9.Southern
10. NWSU
11. Nichols

Get out drawn by the HS as well. Listen, there is nothing wrong with Div II if that's where you fit.

1. Texas
2. Texas A&M
3. Texas Tech- this last year has been incredible outside of football. Tech fans are living it up.
4. TCU- Very good rep here in Texas due to sustained football success
5. Baylor- women's basketball. Football success is starting to fade from memory though.
6. Houston- solid in many sports.
7. North Texas- Rising in football. Sustained success in women's soccer. No baseball hurts.
8. SMU- basketball rep. No baseball. Probably flippable with UNT based on who won in football most recently any given year.
9. Texas State- rising rep in basketball and baseball. Football hurts though.
10. UMHB- Texans are aware of their long time success in football, including a nattie.
11. Rice
12. UTEP
13. Abilene Christian- 11-13 probably interchangeable at this point on current reputation. Rice and UTEP have bright spots in their histories though that old timers might remember.
14. UTSA- rising in basketball. Football plummeting.
15-60 whatever- interchangeable.

Funny you mention Texans being aware of UMHB due to their success but then forget that they have 2 nattys not 1.

Honestly if I didn't live 10 minutes from the campus I'd have no idea it existed. They have a hell of a program though!

To answer your first question UTs brand is definitely still the most recognized in the state AND they could beat anyone in state. Tech and TCU will never be on UTs level regardless of how successful their athletic departments are. TCU has the hurdle of being private and Tech has the disadvantage of basically being in New Mexico. Also Houston and North Texas will never "encroach" on longhorn territory. UH has a niche in Houston but the city is still dominated by UT, Aggy, and LSU and UNT will always be overlooked in the metroplex by those three in addition to TCU nearby, Baylor relatively nearby, and Tech.

I’m not saying there is anything wrong with D2. I’m just saying that if that school lived up to its potential it could be FCS with along with North Alabama and some other old competitive teams. Even it’s rival (University of West Georgia) teased about moving up for a little while.

My mother's a graduate of Jacksonville State so always a soft spot for those Gamecocks! And, they've got a helluva football program so I do not disagree with putting them in the middle of the Alabama teams. 05-stirthepot I think Auburn's overrated, though...
