I always say in these tournaments how huge that first game is. I mean take Georgetown as a prime example this year. They win 1st game, and they get a shot at Duke. Lose, and they're stuck playing Cal. A huge difference there...

Villanova got unlucky that Memphis pulled out of the Myrtle Beach tournament.

Agreed, would have been a good game for both teams resumes.

yeah. For as good as Nova has been, they've been in a few real mediocre tournaments recently. This one, last years one in Orlando was pretty mediocre, 3 years ago in Charleston, the NIT 4 years ago. Even the good one turned out bad(the Battle 4 Atlantis where you had upsets galore). Really strange. Kind of surprised we never see them going to do a Maui Invitational or something big like that. Especially now with how great of a run they've been on.

decent one. Not great, not awful... Going to be really big to make the final in Orlando to get Maryland presumably. The Purdue game is huge to get a home win there, otherwise the other 2 known games are on the road- and a possible 3rd is neutral.

I'm not sure how they bracketed the Orlando Invitational, but it is odd seeing Marquette face Davidson (a team returning all five starters from last year's team, and the likely favorite in the A10) in the first round. It seems like they bracketed the power conference teams (USC/Marquette/TAMU/Maryland away from each other in opening rounds).

often times they'll seed it to get the better games for later on. But it's weird that the 2 best teams- Marquette and Maryland- have real tough opening round games- Marquette with Davidson and Maryland with Temple.

If they did it by NET (last year):
1. Maryland (25)
2. Marquette (29)
3. Temple (57)
4. Texas A&M (80)
5. Davidson (81)
6. USC (87)
7. Harvard (117)
8. Fairfield (294)

Expected Rank (T-Rank)
1. Maryland (7)
2. Harvard (19)
3. Marquette (29)
4. Davidson (50)
5. Texas A&M (51)
6. USC (76)
7. Temple (98)
8. Fairfield (231)

In Andy Katz's preseason ratings, he has Marquette as #23 and Davidson as #31 (Maryland as #11). Some rankings have USC as a top-25 team entering next year, considering their strong recruiting class (top-5). I just wonder what metric they used, if anything.

I just wonder if they wanted 2 pretty good matchups as games for Thanksgiving. That day has gotten really competitive now.

Yeah, that could be it too.
