Interesting...why wouldn’t you as a UCF fan not like to play UAB? I don’t think the AAC will add anyone for a few more years at least anyway...

Podcast totally buys into the G5 vs P5 stuff. Aac not really in the G5 anymore in terms of contract,coverage and mentality. This new TV contract is also going to continue to separate us from the other 4 conferences.

UAB is a solid choice assuming that you needed another member right now.

Maybe it’ll be different when you have your ocs but most of aac members remember a painfully empty game day stadium playing Uab in cusa. It was hard to watch and even worse on tv.

Fair point. Our new stadium will be downtown in 2021.

RE: New Podcast About the Group of 5 “The G5 Beat”
Why don't the Group of Five bring an anti-trust suit against the Power 5 Conferences and the CFP?

Found this discussion on "reddit/cfb" interesting with respect to the hegemonic financial dominance of the P5 over the G5.

Why don't the Group of Five bring an anti-trust suit against the Power 5 Conferences and the CFP?
Discussion

I'm not an expert, but from what I know and what I see, the power conferences have been acting as a cartel since at least the founding of the Bowl Coalition. For 25 years now, they've worked with each other to ensure their mutual prosperity to the exclusion of the mid-major conferences.

So the question is clear: why don't the G5 sue to force the P5 to expand the franchise?

Well technically the P5 is a group of entities, so in order to "sue the P5" you would have to sue all 5 major conferences.

The G5 conferences exist and serve at the pleasure of the individual school AD's and school presidents. The goal of many of those schools is to become a member of a P5 conference. The schools won't allow the conferences to burn bridges.

The G5 won't sue because the P5 won't include them in the playoff, they would just sever the G5 and P5 entirely. At that point the G5 makes less money. Basically the relationship works to the benefit of both in different ways. The P5 get the most out of it, but they are also historically the most important actors in the industry. The G5 gets a bunch of people who can prop up their TV rights money and occasionally pay them to get their ass beat.

Short Answer: Money. Right now the G5 still gets a hefty paycheck for playing regular season games vs. the P5. Not to mention Bowl sharing cash and part of the National TV exposure.

Give it some time, but I would imagine the suit would be against the committee rather than a media term.

How would it be against the committee? Because of the results of their voting?

So, here's what I think:

The G5 (and smaller schools generally) should threaten to leave the NCAA. You might think, "what would the NCAA care, they're a creature of the P5," but that would be an oversimplication. The NCAA, along with being an organizational committee is also involved with merchandising and media. When the NCAA was formed, the percentage of people who graduated from flagship state schools would have been significantly higher than it is now. The growth of secondary campuses is a recent phenomenon with the increased importance of a degree. Keep in mind that the ONLY real satellite campus in the entire P5 is UCLA. With the growth of these campuses, the vast majority of people probably attended a satellite campus. Right now, the NCAA benefits far more from mid-majors and small schools than they do from the NCAA, and that leverage needs to be exerted.

RE: New Podcast About the Group of 5 “The G5 Beat”
============================================

That's the most innovative idea on the topic I've seen - - G5 using its leverage by threatening to exit from the NCAA (fb only, no doubt).

The only way to do it would be to announce that the G5 plans to form its own autonomous league, mirroring that of the P5, at some date in the future that wouldn't cause problems for game scheduling or current media agreements.

Because some (AAC) G5 conferences have media deals extending to 2032, the year of the G5's threatened "autonomy" would probably be set at 2032 in order for this to be possible.

Basically, the G5 conferences would be giving the P5 conferences 12 years to work out a deal with the G5 FB conferences.

And it would involve real negotiating with a G5 Commissioner's Office, which would need to be created.

Mostly, it would be just a threat to split off, in the hopes that the P5 wouldn't want to lose a sizable part of their CFB market (i.e., the G5 markets and the G5 fb viewership) if the G5 ever were to split.

But it's possible that the G5 conferences & schools would actually be better off by splitting off from the P5/G5 system, altogether.

This prospect might scare the bejesus out of the P5 Commissioner and all of his conference commissioners.

No pressure would be exerted at first, but at some point in the next 8 or 10 years, if not sooner, the P5 schools would be working on their schedules and wanting to schedule some G5 games, as they've always done.

The G5 would have a Commissioner who P5 schools would have to deal with before scheduling G5 teams. As soon as they tried and failed, they would realize they're entering into a crisis.

Crisis problem #1:

Other than 1 FCS game, all the other OOC games would have to be played against P5 competition, which might be rougher on players, causing more injuries.

Crisis problem #2: Eliminating the G5 games from the schedule makes the P5 conferences less interesting, and their G5 markets might diminish considerably.
'
============================================

It would be similar to the days when the AFL was separate from the NFL, back before the AFC came into existence.

At first, the much bigger and elite big-time market NFL ignored the silly little AFC, but after the AFC proved itself to be a viable enterprise with good attendance and TV numbers, the NFL pounced and swallowed up the AFL, incorporating almost all the AFL teams into the AFC.

The logic for the G5 would be similar. At first, the P5 might shrug off the threat, but gradually, day by day, it might get start to get scared about the media market that they could lose if the G5 teams refused to play them. Also scary might be the potential market size that the G5 might be able to gain as an autonomous entity.

The goal of all this isn't to actually "secede," but to threaten secession and use it as a bargaining tactic.

It would turn the table. Instead of reluctantly consenting to play G5 teams, the P5s would be put in the position of asking the G5s to play them. "The shoe would now be on the other foot."

If the G5 as an organization were to be determined enough to pull it off, the P5s would be screwed in a variety of ways. ESPN and the other broadcasters would certainly broadcast the G5 games, and Americans would realize more and more that G5 football is just as interesting as P5 football is.

ESPN et al. would probably realize that they shouldn't be paying the P5 conferences 5 or 10 times as much per year as they're paying the G5, which in ten years will probably have a larger media market then they do now, thanks in part to the growing market of the AAC.

Let's say the audience for average P5 games is three times higher than the audience for average G5 games in 2032. In that case, it would only make sense for ESPN to pay the P5s no more than 3 times the amount that they are paying the G5 teams.

What this would mean is that the P5 schools would lose about 30%-35% of the amount they're accustomed to being paid.

============================================

How would things end up?

Most likely, the P5 representatives will work with the G5 representatives to try to work out a deal that will keep the G5 schools in the existing system.

But the G5 would now be in the driver's seat, and it might prefer to focus its negotiating efforts on working out much better media payouts from ESPN.

They could negotiate

a) Media payouts to G5 conferences remaining in the current system.

b) Media payouts to G5 conferences as an autonomous entity.

Presumably, ESPN would prefer the current system to the potential of a separate G5, and would offer a larger media package to maintain the current system.

But the G5 wouldn't make a new agreement with ESPN unless they make a good enough offer.

By the time news of these discussions become public knowledge, potential competitors to ESPN (CBSports, FoxSports, NBSports, etc.) would see the G5 as a potential way to get into the lucrative college football broadcasting business.

Let's say even one of these approaches the G5 with a better off than it gets from ESPN. Then, we're off to the races! That's how the AFL did it - it had its games broadcast on the much younger and up-coming ABC Sports, while the NFL was broadcast on CBS or NBC.

I'm not saying that the G5 would be able to secure media payouts in the same range as those of the P5, but they might be able to get something close to half as much as the P5 would be paid.

And that would be a fantastic outcome for the G5.
