Maryland 5 years in the Big Ten
https://dbknews.com/2019/07/01/maryland-...g-big-ten/

Quote:It’s been five years since Maryland moved to the Big Ten.

In that time, the Terps have been one of the most successful schools in the Big Ten, winning five national championships and claiming 32 Big Ten championships. There have been numerous All-Americans, Big Ten Players of the Year and Big Ten Coaches of the Year.
Just have to find a way of turning around football and improving men's basketball.

I've enjoyed Maryland being a part of the conference. Football is going to get there, I truly believe it will. Basketball is fine and Maryland will be great again.

Great job Maryland! Rutgers, what have you done?

But seriously, I am glad both are in the Big Ten. Especially from a Penn State point of view. They are two of the top four most played opponents for football of our conference members. Not everyone can be bowl eligible or make the NCAA tournament.

Are all five of the National Championships in lacrosse? I know the men have 1 and I think the women have all 3 or 4 lost one year to North Carolina. Terp fans are there any other Nattys besides lacrosse?

Starting to move along. Fundraising is humming along, which has allowed the school to make significant upgrades in both academic and athletic facilities. Rutgers produced two national champions this year on what now is considered one of the consistently elite wrestling programs in the country. Basketball team is showing legitimate signs of life and will probably compete for a tourney spot this year. Men's Lacrosse made it to #1 in the polls in 2017 at one point and finished in the top 20 for the third straight year, 2018 finished just outside the top 20 but was one of the top vote getters afterwards, 2019 expected to compete for the top 10 again. Several track and field athletes won their individual conference titles.

Hopefully this year Rutgers football either finally gets on track or fires Ash. That's really has been what has hurt the athletic program the most, especially since we got into the B1G riding on the momentum of this program under Schiano before it crashed once his recruits graduated/left for the pros.

Maryland 5 years in the Big Ten
Just saw this come up. This is "based on a rolling five-year average of each school’s finishing place in the final standings for the NACDA Director’s Cup". Another interesting way of looking at all the schools in the conference.

RE: Maryland 5 years in the Big Ten
With another season down, I was wondering how Maryland and Rutgers were assimilating into the conference. Are the fans embracing the move to the Big Ten or wishing for old flames rekindled?

The great thing about college sports are the rivalries and it's something I love about it. I was wondering if there was any rivalries brewing for the two newest members. I assume Penn State is highest for both based on proximity and history but wondered if there were any others developing. I feel like Nebraska is getting to a point where playing Iowa and Wisconsin gets heated. We'll see if Frost can make them more competitive.

Rutgers and Penn State love to talk trash to each other, especially since a good portion of PSU students and alum are from NJ. Schiano will get the ship righted, and hopefully we get a nice healthy hateful rivalry going. That first year in the B1G with the remaining Schiano players we should have beaten them but Nova threw that pick late in the game to lose it after we had been up 10-0 at the half and were beating up Hackenberg.

It depends on who you ask. The older alumni/fans miss the ACC and believe the football program was thrown under the bus for money. They say Maryland is a basketball-first school in a conference with a dominant football culture. This group was content with challenging and winning the ACC football title.

Otoh, I think the younger fans like the Big Ten and contend the ACC didn't show any respect to Maryland, a founding conference member. They also like being associated with other similar flagship, public research universities. This group likes the money and association, but are they serious sports fans?

The problem is the older fans are the ones who attend the games and donate to the Terrapin Club. Not sure how Maryland deals with that issue.

Maryland football fans hate Penn State and would like the Nittany Lions to become a rival that's not so lopsided and hope Rutgers improves now that Greg Schiano is back on board. As for basketball, I imagine Michigan State would be it.

This year Maryland football suffered several severe blowout losses. The football program has become a joke and embarrassment. Many alumni/fans have called for the heads of the school president, AD and HC. A minority would like to de-emphasize football, and some jokesters are calling on Maryland football to join the Colonial Athletic Association.

I see the potential in Maryland football. It has NFL quality players in the skill positions, except for QB. It just lacks large linemen and depth on the line. Plus a HC and staff. Maryland was shortsighted to letting go of Matt Canada. I thought he did a decent job
