A number of coaches were forced out or phased out by the new athletics dept. I don't think Sauer was part of that though.

The man has been here over 30 years. I'll grant you the timing is conspicuous, but I take him at what he said his reasoning was--a desire to get closer to home for family reasons.

Does W&M football have a dedicated strength coach or is there just one for the whole AD?

IIRC, Keir Wenham-Flatt (who's actually a rugby guy) is the football team's S&C coach now

Football has one strength coach who only works with football and a couple others who oversee other sports that also help out with football. The head of sports performance also works with football I assume but can't say for sure.

I also remember a short time ago they were advertising for a basketball strength coach. I'm not sure if they have filled that position yet.

It definitely seems that under Eric Korem that they have put together a very high level strength & conditioning staff. They are very progressive in their training ideas. I'm sure that, combined with the fact Sauer is a 100% old school strength coach, hastened his depaeture.

Probably also that he started looking around the room and not recognizing the people there. Have we started interviewing for a new "get back" guy on the sideline?

Everything I know was that he was liked and respected by the players. Look up Jaret and Jarrett podcast this last fall. They had fun with him and he had fun with them. Jack respected him a ton during his time there. 30 years in one place says enough about his commitment and character. I wish him well!

I wont speculate on coach's reasoning or the timing. Just know you will not encounter a better human being or a man more committed to his craft. I wish Coach Sauer all the best in his return to Montana, a place he surely still considers home. Thank you for all your years of dedication to the student athletes Rock! You will be missed and you'll always be part of the Tribe!

Korem certainly spends enough time on Twitter promoting himself and touting pseudoscience. I really respected Sauer and think this is a significant loss. He took what he was given - often raw and underdeveloped compared to our competition - and nearly every athlete he worked with showed meaningful and substantial improvement. He was also extremely well respected in the CSCS community

I have all the respect in the world for Sauer and he will always be a part of the Tribe family.

Korem is a product of the analytics era and analyzing data. Is data driven sports analytics pseudoscience? I think it depends. Used responsibly, I think it allows a great deal of insight into the effectiveness of a training program. It is a bit removed from Olympic power lifting of old, but I don't think it is wrong. It is a new way of approaching training. Not wrong, but an uncomfortable change from what traditional coaches are used to. I'm not immersed in the strength coaching industry, but I'm excited about the direction of the staff. IMO, seems like Korem and staff are at the cutting edge of modern training.

Much like all of the changes going on in Williamsburg, time will tell if it will work out and be the correct choice. Ultimately, the proof is in the pudding. Korem and staff may tweet a lot, but many of these tweets reflect excitement in the program and guys getting personal best results. Neither are bad things in my book.

Things are radically different now than 30 years ago. Now it's all about wellness, physical, and emotional optimization. Studies on diet, amounts of sleep, stress, etc. are all in the fore front. I'm all in on it, I think Sauer was great at a part of the whole and showed a lot of success.

Part of the wellness bit is emotional wellbeing and stability. At this point, only Bo, Bill, and Shane remain from what our football players knew a year ago. MBB players know one face, kinda. WSoc...swimming...LAX starting from scratch. Front office blown up, new strength & conditioning staff, etc.

Change can be a good thing but our student-athletes forged relationships and many of those support systems were fired, given every reason to leave (i.e. demoted), or suddenly decided to go. Gotta be tough for 18-20 year-olds.

Tribal, it is definitely difficult, especially for those who are freshmen and seniors. Picking a college and program to play for is usually stressful to begin with. Picking one and having it change in an instant can be like a rug being pulled out from under you. Being a senior and having to deal with a regime change can be tough after spending the first three/four years under a staff you know and who knows you. Tough to have to prove yourself all over again.
