No they aren't, the revenues aren't there. At best the Big 12 will lose a few members and the top half of the AAC will join up with the bottom half of the Big 12 in a southern/plains states focused league. The jump to the ACC or B1G isn't happening.

If the PAC wants to be viable, yes, yes they will. Currently three of the 5 are at 14 and struggling to keep teams happy with rivals being separated. Going to 16 means two 8 team divisions which sounds a lot like the ol Big 8, PAC 8, SWC type conferences, while maintaining market share and power structure. The PAC can also take the longhorn network. Texas and three others (who is irrelevant the PAC needs Texas) leaving for the PAC will start a frenzy. WV and OU are likely headed to the SEC which gives them a tight complete footprint and allows them to restructure into old rivalry set ups. Missouri and Kansas to the B1G means TCU/Texas Tech to the SEC. That leaves four teams from the big 12 none of.which are viable to the ACC, where are they getting their plus 1 to match with ND who they will need like the PAC needs Texas?

Notre Dame just made the CFP as an independent and has more money than God. Any discussed changes to the CFP structure have been with an eye on making it more accessible, not less. They're not joining a conference anytime soon. The Big 12 may get poached, but that's going to be a contraction of the monied club, not an expansion. The resulting conference of leftovers and call-ups will fill the role the AAC currently does, not cash $30 million disbursements of their own.

At the bottom:
St. Johns, Providence, Seton Hall, etc. are MUCH > brand/perception vs ECU, USF, Tulane and Tulsa. Anybody who disagrees is being willingly ignorant.

The to top:
Nova, UCONN, Gtown, and XU are >/= in brand/perception on the whole vs the sum of UH (just recently started doing something), UC (ncaa flame out U), Memphis, and Temple.

Plus, the Big East alone helps this perception. They didn't pay the AAC $88M or whatever it was for that name 'just because'. Sure its not the same Big East of old, but the name has cache.

This is a great move for UCONN (hoops). They are in a better perceived league and now its even MORE SO because they were the biggest basketball brand in the AAC. If there was any doubt as to perception Big East vs AAC prior to the move, that doubt has been resolved.

The AAC will be under the Big East perception wise moving forward. And there is nothing anybody can do about it.

If one team in the AAC rises up and all of a sudden goes to four stragiht final fours, it will just be seen as "Memphis in CUSA". It won't raise the conference above the Big East.

Better accept this now.

What's good for UConn doesn't have to be bad for us. Their priority is basketball, and the Big East is a better basketball conference. On our end, the hit of losing what has become an average basketball team is more than made up by jettisoning our worst football team.

Can everyone just pretend like we just backfilled UConn with Wichita (who has been better than UConn since they got here) in basketball and move on with our lives?

Putting Wichita and UCONN in the same basketball universe 01-wingedeagle

Post-Calhoun (recruits) UConn has left a lot to be desired. You better hope this fixes your b-ball blues or you’re gonna be a BE anklebiter instead of an AAC mid-packer.

I'll miss you too. 03-weeping

I will reconnect with you at the HolyLand.

This is precious.

UCONN is a top 22 land grant Public University in the USA. There is none in the AAC. Most of those schools are in the conferences above. What part of it do you not get?

Hmm. 65-22= 43 p5 programs that are behind you in this stat. My question is what difference does this stat make to them. I truly don't think any casual fan of college football knows or gives a flip about that when it comes to rooted feelings there favorite "sports " team. Outside of coming across as an arrogant prick about a non relevant stat. What part of that you don't get?[/code]

I also believe the landscape for conference deals will be changing over time. I doubt media companies will pay $50M per year to teams like RU in the B1G when RU is basically leeching off teams like Michigan and OSU. The trend is you might see more independent or individual team deals vs. massive conference deals where teams like IOWA State etc. will get big payouts for just in a conference with Texas and OSU.

If Texas and OSU don't join the B1G in the next media deal go around, they might go indy (at least Texas might) to get its own media deal. These kinds of moves might change the college landscape forever.

The Big East is the final jump. You don't make the jump, basically conceding death on your football program, if you think a P5 jump will be there. They made the calculation that football is a lost cause. They've taken themselves out of the P5 game. The Big East is a great league for UConn if you are forsaking football. I hope it works out for them.

If I'm a UConn fan, the only thing that worries about this move is that the administration doesn't seem to realize what they've done. They HAVE killed football, but don't seem to have realized it. They are trying a half measure. I'd respect their decision a lot more if they just announced 'Hey, yeah, we're cratering football and are going to focus on bball and olympic sports'. I still think that would be a bit of an off move for a school that wants to be a national institution, but at least they had a plan.

Right now, it appears they have no plan, and considering the incompetence of the administrators that have led to a major budget crisis and the position they are in now, I'm really worried about the people in charge more than I am about the move.

True. Their decision conference off as arrogant and desperate and the thing is most people outside of NBE lovers can see this mistake from a mile away. Hey I hope you guys can make a go of it back in your safe zone of nostalgia in the NBE but I for one am relieved to have your negative self hating, conference hating backstabbers gone. And no I'm not bitter about it because I've stated this many times over the years. A big reason why the AAC was underperforming was due to UCONN and Memphis underperforming,,,that the truth and I've always stated that also. The only thing was Memphis never blamed the conference for our poor performance and bad coaching hires.

UConn is now Homecoming U.

RE: UConn fans do not realize this is a different Big East than the old Big East
(Warning: long rambling post)

If you asked me a year ago, I would have been seriously opposed to this Big East decision. At this moment in time, however there is some method to this madness for UConn. This decision seems to be based on UConn assuming that our worst case scenario in the next possible round of conference realignment in 2024 comes to fruition (after all, we are still the reigning “biggest loser” of conference realignment, so it would have been likely). So, let’s first look at current reality.

Cultural Fit: UConn was a geographic outlier in the AAC. We had no previous history with any of the schools (save for some Big East history with Cincy, USF, and Temple in football). Our fan base became indifferent due to not playing our traditional rivals that were in our own backyard. In basketball, recruiting NYC was our bread and butter (and it was getting harder to convince those kids to take four hour flights to the deep south and southwest to play solid up and coming, but not fully there yet perception wise, basketball opponents), so we were starting to slide a bit. Plus, on top of being tough on student athletes, all of those long flights for Olympic sports were chewing up our budget. Either way, basketball is our main passion. For most other AAC schools, basketball is merely what you do to fill the time when it isn't football season.

Football Reality: For football, UConn is a school in a state with little high school football talent trying to compete against schools in Texas and Florida that are awash with prospects and located nowhere near us. Our administration (as well as all of you) knew that UConn would never rise to the top in this conference based on geography and the fact that we aren't located in the heart of college football country. For us, football is important, but not as important as basketball. We were never going to catch up with Houston, UCF, Memphis, or Cincinnati in football if we stayed in this conference. Being dead last or in the bottom three every year was beginning to look like our fate. That type of performance in conference was beginning to be a black eye to us. Also, some will say that not being in a conference is suicide since there are no guaranteed bowl tie-ins. Well, regardless, coming out of a G5 league pretty much guarantees that you won’t get into a major bowl (only one G5 slot is available) or the playoffs most years even if you deserve it (you have to go undefeated for a playoff chance, and even then the P5 bias will try and cheat you out of your opportunity). So, we were really clinging to the sad reality that we likely weren’t winning the conference ever and, even if we did, it doesn’t really matter since winning a natty (not just a recognized one, but playing in the actual title game) is a pipe dream in a G5 league - especially for UConn.

TV Reality in the AAC: UConn has no Tier 3 rights and now many games are hidden on ESPN+ starting in 2020 instead of being on ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU/CBSsports. Without SNY as a partner going forward, UConn also loses 14mm homes (mostly in the NYC metro, but also nationally) who tune into UConn women’s and men’s basketball. SNY has other content that highlights UConn basketball, and it is certainly a help in men’s and women’s recruiting. It was practically like having our own channel at times.

TV Reality in the Big East: FS1 and FS2 are now proven commodities and we will get actual air time instead of streaming time. Furthermore, we may get content back onto SNY and likely control our 3rd tier rights (which generate several millions for UConn when we control them). For whatever we lose in TV revenue, we gain it back by decreasing our travel costs.

P5 Realignment reality for UConn in the AAC in 2024: UConn could easily surmise that, if (and that is a big if) the P5 conferences wanted to pick up members in 2024, then at this point we would be behind Houston, UCF, Cincinnati and Memphis due to our football program. The ACC or Big 12 would see that we weren't doing well against these schools and that our basketball attendance was creeping down to our fan base not caring that much about the schools on our schedule (whether they are good or not). Either way, football drives the bus in that scenario, and UConn wasn’t competing with those aforementioned schools as it was tangible that our football wasn’t stacking up against them.

P5 Realignment reality for UConn in the Big East in 2024: Big East membership allows us to demonstrate that we can still sell tons of basketball tickets (UConn fans will flock back against these schools). Playing in NYC a few times a year (as well as the conference tournament) lets UConn demonstrate to the TV powers that be (again) that our fans flock to New York being right next door and that we draw well on national television. Also, football as an Independent will be tough, but it could position us better for a P5 invite. If we can cobble together a schedule that lets us achieve a decent record, then it will be more helpful that finishing 11th in the AAC. Also, with the AAC long behind us by then (people have short memories as evidenced by nobody remembering that we were in the Fiesta Bowl a mere 7 years ago) being an Indy may make us smell better to a P5 conference than being in a G5 conference.

Either way, it simply comes down to this. If Houston, Cincy, and Memphis bolted in 2024, that would be it for UConn’s basketball programs. Dead in the water. At that point, we would have no leverage with the Big East and likely would have slid even more on the court by then due to decreasing fan attendance. Righting the basketball ship now gives us a chance. If realignment happens again in 2024 (once again, a big if), our basketball should look better and our football should, too (if it still exists – also a big if with this gamble). If the P5 leagues don’t expand in 2024, that is game over for everyone in the AAC who wanted to get out anyway. At that point, G5 football is a financial waste and many schools won't be able to continue to justify the budget for it. We are all only spending on it now due to the prayer of making the P5. It is an expensive sport and, if you can’t play with the big boys due to their exclusionary tactics, what is the point? At that time, many schools may just drop football to FCS and play for a natty there. UConn just needs to ensure that man's and woman's basketball, our crown jewels, won’t be left for dead by the side of the road.

Anyway, I will miss this conference and miss you all. I will still root for the AAC teams when we aren’t playing you.

HA! I wasn't inactive. There just wasn't much to discuss in the off season this past two months until now. I try to focus on work when there isn't much happening here. It is like going to a strip club when the strippers are all off the stage. What's the point? LOL

I never blamed the AAC for UConn's problems. I just highlighted why we aren't a cultural fit. It is hard to get excited with no rival and the only school that we had here that felt close to a rival was Cincy in basketball.

Well.... other than the Civil ConFLiCT. College football is losing a real gem of a game there.

LOL, I noticed that, too. Pretty telling about where the fan base is.

I agree with almost everything in your long, well-stated post, well, except the part about getting into the P5. :)

On a personal note, I will definitely miss your smiling face around here.

HA! I wasn't inactive. There just wasn't much to discuss in the off season this past two months until now. I try to focus on work when there isn't much happening here. It is like going to a strip club when the strippers are all off the stage. What's the point? LOL

Hey, afternoon shift can be the better teacher of life lessons...

Don't worry. We are looking to fill out our Indy schedule if you guys want to schedule an annual win for yourselves.

Cultural Fit:
-"playing our traditional rivals that were in our own backyard"
-"recruiting NYC was our bread and butter (and it was getting harder to convince those kids to take four hour flights to the deep south and southwest"
-"Plus, on top of being tough on student athletes, all of those long flights for Olympic sports were chewing up our budget"

Football Reality:
-" in a state with little high school football talent trying to compete against schools in Texas and Florida"
-"knew that UConn would never rise to the top in this conference"
-"Being dead last or in the bottom three every year was our fate."

TV Reality in the AAC:
- "Without SNY as a partner going forward"

TV Reality in the Big East:
-"FS1 and FS2 are now proven commodities"
-"we will get actual air time instead of streaming time."
-"we may get content back onto SNY"
-"For whatever we lose in TV revenue, we gain it back by decreasing our travel costs."

P5 Realignment reality for UConn in the AAC in 2024:
-" UConn wasn’t competing with those aforementioned schools as it was tangible that our football wasn’t stacking up against them. "

P5 Realignment reality for UConn in the Big East in 2024:
-"Big East membership allows us to demonstrate that we can still sell tons of basketball tickets"

-"lets UConn demonstrate to the TV powers that be (again) that our fans flock to New York being right next door and that we draw well on national television."

-"Also, football as an Independent will be tough, but it could position us better for a P5 invite.

-"an Indy may make us smell better to a P5 conference than being in a G5 conference."

Either way, it simply comes down to this. If Houston, Cincy, and Memphis bolted in 2024, that would be it for UConn’s basketball programs. Dead in the water.
--At that point, we would have no leverage with the Big East
.

you are a good poster and your post was well thought out and i mean no disrespect by this ..but most of it was denial and not based in any reality

Football realty:
1) there are tons of team in similar situations as uconn that win..TONS...big example is Oregon who struggled longer than uconn did..all it took for Oregon was finding the right coach to break the dam.....buffalo just put together an elite season with the same recruiting grounds beating a few aac along the way...we are aware the best G5 is located in boise, idaho?

2) your entire post is just defeatist ... "i tried for a few short years, it didnt work so itll never happen"

TV Reality in the AAC:
1) espn president just said a month ago that espn was definitely willing to negotiate with SNY. that if sny wanted it to continue it would happen

TV Reality in the Big East:
1) FS2 averages less than most online streams, games are rarely put on fs2. how are they a proven commodity? 9k viewers is a proven commodity?

2) uconn got the majority of AAC cbs and abc spots...uconn was on tv more than most AAC/Big East..you definitely wont get more tv time in the BE in respect to mens bball as simply put ESPN has more channels and uconn was prioritized. we are aware the espn+ deal would have just mostly affected the bad teams and womens bball (which espn was willing to dual air with sny)

3) why is the assumption youll just get all the BE otas (fox) like you did in the AAC, you wont be atop the todem pole like you were in this league

4) The BE doesnt allow members to sell 3rd party rights....they control 100% of rights of its members....SNY isnt guaranteed with them either.....
-- but interesting side note is that fox sports put all the BE 3rd tier rights on fox sports local networks,...fox intends to sell those. there is uncertainty there

5) the difference between our tv deal is 3 mill per year ( aac 7mil, Big east 4mil)...the total difference between the travel costs wont be 3 million

P5 Realignment reality for UConn in the Big East in 2024:
1) have you considered the reason your recruiting and attendance was falling off in basketball is because you weren't winning and NOT the conference.....
all the top team in the conference who also don't have rivals all seem to be doing fine attendance wise
-subpar for 5 straight years----"our attendance is falling because of the conference"
--STOP BLAMING THE CONFERENCE FOR YOUR OWN MISFORTUNES

2) the big east will definitely put clauses in the contract to prevent uconn to the p5....

3) playing sunbelt teams and being buy games for p5 will make you more attractive to p5??? no offense thats crazy...if that was the case good low level mac/sunbelt teams would be prime from p5 invites...like army with c-usa they'll say "they couldn't even win at the aac level"

leaving is the death of p5 for uconn

4) 2024 is literally on 4 years away, to think you want have any leverage in the big east in that short of a span is crazy..especially because uconn is projected on an upswing in basketball..
