Plus, the success of the AAC pretty much shows that you can 'win' from here... 3 NY6 bowl wins (thanks UCF and Houston) and a quasi NC. Would think BYU would have LOVED to have that much attention. We are not the SBC/MAC/MWC/cUSA.
Bingo. There should be some common ground but we may have to get a little creative to find it. We're by far the best thing going outside the P5 and we actually have a lot to offer BYU at this point in time notwithstanding their 'arrogance.' It's not like we're asking them to sign a GOR and I have a sneaky suspicion that they'd prefer an all sports invite as opposed to football only which intrinsically turns the attention towards BSU as well. Again, it may end up not being feasible for a variety of reasons but it also makes too much sense to ignore. Exploring our options is critical right now and we have a lot more bargaining power than many realize at this point in time.
BYU doesn’t care if it makes sense they care about not admitting that Utah is better than them. In their eyes joining a G5 conference means they are conceding defeat and that Utah is a better program. Unless we become a P5 conference BYU wont accept anything we offer them.
Sent from the warp via the ruinous powers of chaos.
Simple facts are BYU has been doing just fine going independent, you are correct in feeling BYU is not happening. I would say that is very, very unlikely. BYU's last full year in the MWC their athletic revenue was $36,695,623 (which was a very good year, more than $4 million more than the year before- $32,100,899). But compare that to BYU's first full year as an Independent... Their athletic revenue was $53,033,508 (a $16,337,885 increase), with a net revenue of $4,698,770. The BYU ESPN TV contract was back loaded (bigger payouts in the back part of the contract), so you would expect BYU's athletic revenue to increase in that case. Which it has in a very big way, last year BYU's athletic revenue was $79,644,919 with a net revenue of $10,587,333. https://ope.ed.gov/athletics/#/
That is a difference of $42,949,296, from between their last year in the MWC and last year. As far as Utah and their Golden ticket to the Pac they have done great, but all of the perks from Pac... Utah's athletic revenue last year was $82,467,618 with a net revenue of $8,099,427. That's a total of $2,822,699 more than BYU, but BYU had $2,487,906 more in net revenue.
What was the revenue in their more recent years of independence (i.e. when games later in the year stopped being meaningful)? And what is the net, most importantly, because their expenses are different than ours?
2017- Revenue $79,644,919; Net Revenue $10,587,333
2016- Revenue $67,733,712; Net Revenue $5,117,492
2015- Revenue $62,563,279; Net Revenue $8,133,596
2014- Revenue $59,032,406; Net Revenue $4,613,998
2013- Revenue $60,124,096; Net Revenue $6,599,801
2012- Revenue $54,644,578; Net Revenue $5,126,791
2011- Revenue $53,033,508; Net Revenue $4,698,770 (1st full year Independent)
2010- Revenue $45,465,068; Net Revenue $4,656,219 (1/2 year MWC, 1/2 year Independent)
2009- Revenue $36,692,623 (Last full year in the MWC)
2008- Revenue $32,100,899
