New North Carolina, Georgia Tech coaches could hurt Tennessee football recruiting
A couple of SEC outsiders could provide even more competition, thanks to new coaching hires at North Carolina and Georgia Tech.

Mack Brown, who won 158 games in 16 seasons at Texas, came out of retirement after last season and returned to North Carolina, where he coached from 1988 to 1997. Brown has won wherever he has been. He also has recruited well. He apparently hasn’t lost his recruiting touch. The Tar Heels already have 15 commitments, including four four-stars, for 2020. Brown might make it more difficult to get players out of North Carolina.

Geoff Collins isn’t recruiting as well as North Carolina in his first year at Georgia Tech. However, his recruiting work far exceeds that of his predecessor, Paul Johnson. And Collins' initial success – 15 commitments (but only one four-star) – has the Yellow Jackets ranked 14th.When Johnson was the head coach at Georgia Tech, he rarely offered recruiting competition for the Vols. He was recruiting to an option offense, which required a slew of running backs and smaller offensive linemen. Collins will be pursuing the same type of players as Tennessee and Georgia are. But once Collins has had time to establish his program, recruiting could become more competitive for the Vols in Georgia.

It's the job of ACC coaches to make sure the best in-state talent stays in state.
SEC teams like Tennessee will just have to look West...

Mack Brown is from Cookeville, Tenn. where his father was the High School Football coach. Mack attended Vanderbilt like his older brother,Watson, before transferring to Florida State.
If Mack needed to reach out to any kid in Tennessee, I would imagine that he would have deep rooted connections.

Did the Hill create a Calculus exception for athletes? If not, I’m not too concerned about Tech.

As you are likely aware, the highest mode of GT athletes major in Business Administration. This used to be the College of Management. In the B.S. BA degree program, there are mathematics courses to meet core course requirements which are not calculus (e.g., Finite Math, Linear Algebra, Math for Management). So, while it isn't an "exception for athletes" since it is for all who major in BA at Ga Tech, it is a better reflection of the needs for business majors who do not require what used to be 5 quarters or 1.5 years of calculus. Call it GT finally waking up to reality.

In parallel, GT's Scheller Business School's undergrad program has continually moved up the various rankings over the years and remains one of the best in the nation. So, there has been no drop off and instead has been a soaring of improvements in quality and reputation.

As a father of a proud Vols alum and a fan of the Big Orange myself, as far as FB recruiting goes, I think we have plenty to worry about in addition to GT or UNC considering this past mediocre-to-awful decade since the idiotic removal of Fulmer took place. Having said that, GO VOLS!

He did. Here's what happened...

After going 1-10 in his first 2 seasons at UNC, Mack Brown never had a losing season there after 1989. His best seasons were 1992-97; here are some highlights:
1992 won Peach Bowl over #24 Mississippi St; finished 9-3
1993 won @USC Trojans in opener; lost to #18 Alabama in Gator Bowl; finished 10-3
1994 beat TCU in opener; lost to Texas in Sun Bowl; finished 8-4
1995 lost to Syracuse in opener; beat #24 Arkansas in Carquest Bowl; finished 7-5
1996 won @ #9 Syracuse in game 2; beat #25 WVU in Gator Bowl; finished 10-2, AP #10
1997 beat Indiana and #18 Stanford and @TCU; beat VT in Gator Bowl; finished 10-1, AP #4

Most people in general aren’t interested in math beyond the basic four functions, athletes included. Using Stanford as a comp is erroneous as Palo Alto has a Liberal Arts college which don’t have the math requirements. Tech is more like a Service Academy in that everyone get a BS degree. The change mentioned earlier makes Tech a more viable option. Moving away from the triple option is also a huge benefit.

Didn't Tennessee win the BCS in '97 or '98??

I don't think UT's ever been scared of UNC or GT.

Georgia, yes. GT, no.

About that whole Stanford being difficult thing: https://www.sfgate.com/education/article...389506.php

I'm sure Stanford has hard classes. I'm also sure given the very wide breadth of their liberal arts offerings they also have no shortage of comically laughable courses either. What makes GT different is the exclusivity around STEM. There are no "intramural studies" degrees to sweep people into at GT. And unlike in Chapel Hill, GT doesn't just make up entire degree programs to deal with that issue either.

I’m actually happy for Tech as I always felt the Paul Johnson hire was a poor fit for the Jackets.

As an aside, GT got the P5 "benefit" in recruiting and PJ got some 3 stars who shoulda been 2 stars ... there's quite a few players Collins has that are 3 stars who shoulda been 4 stars. Things have gone from competing against the AAC and P5 cellar for recruits to competing against the SEC, and more often than I would have imagined the factory farms in the B1G.

UNC and GT recruiting "above their weight" (read: doing better than recently)... https://247sports.com/LongFormArticle/20...2991514_10

GT's recruiting improvements should be no surprise considering Paul Johnson recruited to a certain style. Why UNC's recruiting under Fedora dropped is a head scratcher. UNC has facilities which are top notch. They put guys into the NFL. Fedora had a wide open attractive offense (read: nothing like GT's). Etc.

The UNC's and GT's of the world (along with pretty much the other 11 below the Tigers) are going to have to recruit light years better if they want to close the massive gap that Clemson has wedged with their outstanding performance.

Three credit hours out of 120 does not a degree program make. If you are going to continue, at least get your facts straight.
