Bellarmine fans, in a perfect world, would y’all rather be in the ASUN or Horizon?

I do consider Louisville a midwestern city, and Bellarmine has some old conference mates (NKU, IUPUI, Wright State, and now IPFW) and a couple of frequent lacrosse opponents (Detroit Mercy and Cleveland State) in the Horizon.

But I think BU does have a legitimate interest in marketing in the south, as they assert that is where the growth in the college-age population will occur (seems like a reasonable claim).

So I see the Horizon as a possibility one day, particularly if Southern Indiana joins as well, but I'm giddy over the ASUN and understand other BU fans are too (at least those excited about the D-I move).

I guess the Horizon makes more sense geographically and as far as natural rivals. Frankly, I like the ASUN because it is south and the opportunity to see some road games in Florida in Jan or Feb is tantalizing. I can't tell you how many times we encountered really bad winter weather trying to go to road games in the GLVC. I think there will be the opportunity to develop some good rivalries in the ASUN. Lipscomb and North Alabama are teams that come to mind as natural rivals. We used to play Lipscomb before they went D1.

I think Florence is only around 4hrs from Louisville.... not bad.

So the D-I move takes effect on July 1st. BU released a "hype video" today and apparently will have a live event tomorrow on Facebook and YouTube.

Watching Wave sports last night Ken Taylor hosted a story on BU's move to D1. He mentioned that Scotty D was putting together a very nice schedule for the coming season. Does anyone have insight on when the schedule will be published.

Yeah, it's here (it kicks off with a repeat of the "hype" vid):

Interesting. In Louisville and beyond (I saw where the Cincy paper had a piece), there's been some nice coverage about Wednesday's confirmation of the D-I move.

Just offhand, and generally speaking, I think the D-I schedules are released before D-II; so we BU fans should see something earlier than we're used to. In this WAVE article, Scotty indicates that we could see it "within a week or two."
https://www.wave3.com/2020/07/01/bellarm...ivision-i/

Haven't heard any rumors recently about potential opponents, but I still think Scotty can use his considerable connections to compile a solid non-conference schedule, albeit with most games on the road.

RE: BELLARMINE
So happy to see Bellarmine finally make the move. Gotta admit, I got a little choked up watching it, thinkin’ about the little college in my neighborhood, that my brother took a few classes at, and friends have attendwd or worked at. I remember playing gold there, and sleddingnon the hill as a kid. Great memories. Great for Bellarmine!

I imagine, to me, the two most obvious games to be scheduled would be Louisville and Northern Kentucky. It will be absolutely great for the city to have an in town rivalry. And playing former conference foe NKU will renew that rivalry.

I attended KWC for three years during their final basketball heydays. Bellarmine was always a big rival, other than Southern Indiana. Wow, how those two programs have taken different paths. Once proud KWC has virtually given up on basketball and as a school and Bellarmine has grown to new heights.

RE: BELLARMINE
We Bellarmine fans have speculated that the Knights might be able to snag a game against UCLA due to Scotty's connection with Mick Cronin (and I think Coach D might've mentioned the Bruins when throwing out names of games he might seek), but this Eric Crawford piece makes it sound like there's a good chance of it happening ("Mick Cronin of UCLA says he’ll give the Knights a game").

Crawford also calls out UK and U of L as squads who should play Bellarmine.

And it's interesting to read that BU should be able to get one or more home games against U of L in women's hoops.

It's like that in football in Alabama, well kind of.

The University of Alabama will not play football against anyone in the state other than Auburn. They say its because they dont want to hurt a "sister" schools recruiting...lol

They dont want their recruits to go away if the other schools make a game of it or somehow win...

Eric Crawford has always been great to Bellarmine and Scotty. He is right. There ought to be a game. I think BU should have home and home deal for a game every year with EKU, NKU, Murray and Morehead. I'd like to see a road game every year against UofL or UK. I'd like to see a 2 for 1 deal with WKU. Its not going to happen but I'd like to see it. If nothing else, surely NKU and EKU should be willing to do a long term home and home.

I can't help but wonder what the effect on BU would be if UofL ends up with the death penalty for a season. BU could end up with a lot of fans that may end up sticking around after UofL starts back up. I do not hope UofL gets the death penalty, but I am amused by the Card fans who seem to be blissfully unaware of the possibility. I honestly not sure I've heard of a worst case for a school. About one month after being sanctioned and placed on probation for providing prostitutes to 17 and 18 year old boys, an assistant coach is on tape offering $100, 000 to a recruit, who was probably the highest rated non committed player in the country and who ends up signing with UofL after not even being publicly recruited by them.

Baloney. WKU currently is much stronger than Bellarmine. I wish WKU would do a 2 for 1. We could be the first DI to play at Bellarmine. I have much respect for their BB program and have been to several of their games.

P.S.-- I have also been to UNA and spent a night in Florence/ Muscle Shoals. Another great area and I hope they might join the OVC for all sports someday.

Nice words...

I respect the OVC but dont think it's the best for UNA.

I think UNA is more like UNF, FGCU, and KSU than anyone other than JSU in the OVC. If the ASUN can pull in West Florida, there is no real reason for UNA to leave the ASUN.

I also like the lineup overall in the ASUN, it's a very healthy mix of schools, public and private that seem happy with each other. I would rather see this group stay together and grow than abandon it for something else.

If UNA ever gets to the point that FBS football is the goal, then I would still like a situation that we could stay in the ASUN and have an associate membership in a FBS conference or be indy in FBS.

RE: BELLARMINE
Knightmoves, that’s a whole lot of hometown games every season: WKU, EKU, NKU, MSU, the other MSU and alternate UofL/UK? That’s 1/3 of your OOC schedule. I’d think some more diversity would benefit the Bellarmine program. But I could be wrong. I often am. I’d try and play UofL and NKU every year, and rotate one of the other KY teams annually. I think three instate games a year is good.
