RE: Ranked Wins
If USM beats a "ranked" team in week 2, and that ranked team finishes the season 5-7 or 4-8....then it definitely shouldn't be counted as a ranked win because that "ranked school" was really just fool's gold that benefited from ridiculous and meaningless pre-season polls. It carries more weight if the team you beat ended up ranked.

This is another reason why I don't think they should ranked teams until October.

VT was not ranked in the AP poll at the end of the year. If you read through the thread you would see that is what the ranking is based on. You can start your own thread that shows a ranking that includes your one win vs a team that did not end the year in the Top 25.

Stupid way to view it. ODU beat #13 VT. Don't try to twist it to say they didn't beat a ranked team.

Numbers are not stupid, there just numbers. I never said they didn't beat a ranked team. I said VT didn't finish the season ranked, hence ODU is not included in this list.

14 wins over ranked teams over a 40 year span. Basically proves what most already know about this conference.

You can put a 1 and 23 by Western's name.....

Marshall was ranked 19th when Western beat them and finished ranked 23rd

Was this regular season or champ game or what? The list is only regular season and where the team ended in AP poll that year but definitely could have mistakes.

Last game of the season, Marshall was 11-0 and finished the season 13-1, ranked 23rd

Then I think you are right and WKU should have a 1 as well so 15 total. I forgot about that crazy game.

Yes and no....

a team could be ranked in week two and be 5-0 in week 5 then lose the starting all world QB and lose out or go .500 and unranked. When S. Miss beat them they were full strength . But overall I agree with you on early season games. But take Marshall who was 11-0 when Western beat them in OT and they were ranked 19th. Took them going 13-1 to get back ranked. Marshall was ranked for 7 straight weeks going into game 12 when Western beat them.....

a OT loss to a team that finished with 8 wins shouldnt have dropped them out of the polls

There's, of course, a difference between beating a ranked team at full strength that had major injuries make them worse at the end and beating a ranked team that ended up never being close to that good in the first place (Duke the season that Coach K had his back issues that took him off the bench comes to mind). But there's really no easy way to quantify that, whereas when you beat a team with a pound sign and a number next to their name, well, you know EXACTLY what that represents, whether that team wins the national title or doesn't win again the rest of the season.

No one is denying ODU beat a VT team that finished the year 6-7. Also, USMs # would go way up if we count any win in a season over a ranked team. So it isn't like the counting method only hurts ODU.

If they did that it would be harder to justify keeping the P5 teams in most of the Top 25 slots. They go ahead and put them there at the beginning of the season so it makes it harder for any non p5 to come up through the rankings. Their teams get the benefit of the doubt.

I agree with you it should start in October.

We beat #6 Kansas St in 2003 and #21 BYU in 1999. I think that’s right.

Yes, end of year ranking in AP poll.

Which also means if we beat them, they AINT gonna be ranked at the end of the year!

BINGO!

BYU was in a bowl, so not counted. The second win we have is against USM in 2011. Yeah Vinny Curry.

No, BYU was #25 coming into the bowl game, unranked after the bowl game.
