RE: BYU, ESPN closing in on a new deal
BYU joins the AAC football only as UConn departs in 2020 via ESPN.....joins a backfilled Big 12 all sports in 2025 via ESPN.

West Virginia, Cincinnati, Memphis, Temple, UCF, USF

BYU, Houston, TCU, Baylor, Kansas State, Iowa State

Stays the ‘Big 12’ and gets a NY6 bowl all their own next contract via ESPN.

They should join for all sports.

Honest question, what do they get by joining in all sports? Moving the FB team around the country 6-7 times per year is one thing. Sending the olympic sports teams all around the country is another.

From the AAC perspective does anyone want the added expense of shipping all those teams to Provo every year? BYU as a football only does not create undue travel expenses for the schools and leaves the opportunity to invites someone in all other sports that might keep current travel costs stable.

BYU is the high maintenance hot girlfriend. You are thrilled to get her only to realize the cost is not worth the benefit. FB only makes sense for both sides. All in doesn't make financial sense for either side.

Now it's in ESPN's best interest to strong-arm BYU to join the AAC and replace UConn.

AAC offers a variety of bowl options for BYU. So its not NY6 (which they haven't been in contention for), Hawaii, or bust.

Independent hasn't worked out. ESPN was moving BYU content to ESPN+ in the new agreement no matter what.

ESPN is going to do what ESPN does best, move the chips where they need to be in order for them to make the most money. At the very least it's leverage for ESPN to use on BYU. You can either accept AAC membership or we low ball you as an independent that barely makes bowl eligibility.

Your contact ends in 2019, what are you going to do? BYU needs to secure a TV and bowl agreement this off-season or they run the risk of not having anything. Even if you decide to run to Fox for a tv deal, what do you do for bowl games? Hawaii bowl is owned by ESPN too.

BYU has no leverage, football and basketball has unperformed in recent years. ESPN is the only partner that brings tv money and bowl agreements in hand for 2020.

BYU has the substantial leverage of quality future schedules from 2020 and on, including games that ESPN wants to place on ABC or ESPN - many of which were directly orchestrated by ESPN and some of which will be part of ESPN's media deals with other major conferences. ESPN wouldn't simply let things go to FOX or CBS.

2020
Home - Michigan St., Missouri, Houston, Utah St., San Diego St.
Away - Utah, Arizona St., Stanford, Minnesota, Boise St.

2021
Home - Utah, Arizona St., Boise St., Virginia, South Florida
Away - USC, Baylor, Washington St., Utah St., Arizona (in new Vegas stadium)

2022
Home - Baylor, Arkansas, Utah St., Wyoming, ECU
Away - Utah, Oregon, Stanford, Boise St.

2023
Home - Tennessee, Utah, Stanford, Boise St., UNLV
Away - Virginia, Arkansas, USC, Houston

2024
Home - Hawaii, Utah St.
Away - Utah, NC State, UNLV, ECU

2025
Home - Stanford, Virginia, Minnesota, Utah, Boise St.

BYU also brings a little leverage from the bowl angle. BYU tends to travel better and have a bigger fan base for most of the schools that would be available for the level of available ESPN bowls.

And, I don't think ESPN wants to blow things up so they replace BYU v. Arkansas or BYU v. Virginia or BYU v. Arizona St. with BYU v. Tulsa and BYU @ ECU and BYU v. Tulane.

BYU won’t jump unless the AAC-money is *A Lot* better than the Independent-money.

Also, BYU needs to protect their investment in BYUtv, which may or may not interfere with conference media-contracts.

RE: BYU, ESPN closing in on a new deal
BYU has mentioned before about wanting to expand/grow the LDS church in the eastern half of the country. What better way to do that than to join an eastern-based league. I am with those that say football only is the way to go. Especially given BYU's no-play-on-Sunday stipulations. That is very easy to avoid in football but much more difficult in all other sports. For BYU, they gain access to the NY6 and a conference championship game (something that has to be financially attractive), plus all the games on ABC, ESPN, etc. They can still go out and schedule Utah (P5) plus 3-other schools if they like (Boise St maybe as a budding rivalry, mix in another FCS and P5 (or 2 P5s) and they have a legit schedule not far off what they have now. It makes too much sense. Balance out with a non-football like VCU and it's a win-win all-around!

All BYU does with live games these days is show the games that will not be picked up otherwise--usually just the FCS game. But what ESPN gives BYUtv is rebroadcast rights--so they can re-broadcast old games. They do this from time to time to fill some time and let fans around the world enjoy the games. How big a sticking point something like that would be would be interesting--as I don't know that other conferences give those rebroadcast rights to conferences. It is part of what makes BYU "hard to deal with". They currently have it, so of course it comes up as something they'd like to negotiate in joining a new conference.
