Oberlin College Gets Smacked Hard
This is a good start, hopefully we see many more of these arrogant institutions lose tons of money.

And true again. Oberlin 7, Ohio State 6. Game played 08th October 1921 in Columbus.

Wait, seriously? Ohio State hasn't been beaten by an in-state school since 1921?

C'mon, Bearcats. What's up with that?

RE: Oberlin College Gets Smacked Hard
^^ It's not as if UC had an annual crack at the Buckeyes from 1921-the present. The Bearcats played Ohio State in 1919 and then again in 1931. After that, the two teams didn't met again until 1999. Since 1999 we have played 4 times, with a 5th meeting this fall in Columbus (where all the matchups, save for the 2002 contest* took place).

* game played at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati (home of the Cincinnati Bengals). OSU won 23-19, UC had the ball within the Ohio State 12 yards line but failed to score on 4 attempts in waning minute of the game.

1 P5 and 7 G5's in Ohio, imbalance is what's up. Although Cinci did outrank Tosu in the final polls at one point when B. Kelly was there.

Bearcats came within one dropped pass of beating tOSU in a sold out game at PBS in 1999 but sadly have not beaten the Bucks. They get another bite a the apple this year.

And the State legislature makes sure to keep the P5 vs G5 financial inequity in place.

That was 2002.

In 1999 Bearcats jumped out to a 17-3. OSU was having a hard time dealing with the Bearcats airing it out in the spread offense. The Bearcat OC that year was a guy named Jimbo Fisher— some of you night have heard of him. At half Bearcat HC Rick Minter instructed Fisher to run the football as much as possible, play conservatively and eat up clock. Buckeyes came back in the second half and won 30-17.

RE: Oberlin College Gets Smacked Hard
The trial-court judgment has now been upheld by Ohio’s 9th District Court of Appeals, based in Akron.

Compensatory damages plus punitive damages: $25 million, plus interest dating to 2016.
Attorney fees: $6.3 million, plus interest dating to 2016.

Oberlin’s Motion for new trial: denied.

The bakery’s motion to restore the jury’s original verdict of $44 million was denied, so Oberlin did catch a break there.

Oberlin may appeal to the Ohio Supreme Court. Stay tuned.

Unclear to me if Oberlin can push this off on the insurance company. I’ve heard conflicting opinions on that. If, in fact, Oberlin is on the hook for this all by itself, they will probably have to dig into the endowment.

They have a billion in the endowment. They will survive, but the Board won’t be happy and neither will the donors.

This.
They are very rich and they can deal with it. But still, writing a check for approx. Forty Million Dollars (plus, their own attorney fees, which are not reported) represents a level of pain Oberlin will really feel and will really remember for a long time. We’ll see if they learn any lessons from it, or not.

My Grand dad used to always say if you are going to do stupid things that can end up costing you money then maybe if the stupid tax is high enough and painful enough you will stop doing it.

Sounds like Oberlin needs to pony up and pay that Stupid Tax.

BREAKING: Jury awards Gibson's Bakery & owners maximum punitive damages, bringing total judgment against Oberlin College to $33 million. This historic case proves colleges can be held accountable for defamation of private individuals & businesses.

After their smug, arrogant, condescending post-verdict comments, I would have been shocked by a different result.

Now comes the appeal phase and likely settlement negotiations.

I'd make them shut down their college as part of the settlement, citing that they are not fit to teach our kids anything of worth.
