Rice had something a little over 3.00 last year, if I remember correctly. Team GPAs are a horrible measure of anything because they're significantly altered by walk-ons, but any Rice team with 75+ athletes that can maintain something north of 3.00 is impressive to me. Regardless of majors, difficulty of classes, etc.

Rice has high average undergraduate GPAs, as detailed in this article:

How significant is the effect really? In most head-count sports, the number of walk-ons is pretty small.

And why does the inclusion of walk-ons make it a “horrible measure of anything”?

I just think GPA is a terrible measure for academic success in any light. There's no consideration for major, level of classes taken, etc. etc. Plus, in an extreme football scenario, you could have 10-15 walk-ons averaging a 4.0 and that would significantly skew the team average. Maybe "horrible" was too strong language, but I don't see what purpose publishing this kind of thing has.

*To your point about walk-ons, schools post this to brag about the smarts of the kids they're recruiting. Right or wrong, I'm sure they don't really care about what their back up kicker is doing because his story isn't going to influence the parents of a top 300 recruit who is academically inclined.

My first thought on reading the tweet was "Thank goodness for all the remedial reading classes bringing up the average".

I am sure most schools have a lot more PE-type majors and a lot less engineering and pre-med majors than we do, so a comparison of GPAs does not tell the story.

Just watch during bowl season when they introduce the teams how many are majoring in "Parks and recreation" or "communications".

I bet my 15 YO grandson could pull a 3.5 in Parks and Rec. at a state school. Especially if he took the section reserved for athletes.

RE: OT - UT Football GPA Tweet
My son went to private church schools up through 8th grade because we were not favorably impressed by the public schools in our district. After his mom and I divorced, she moved to a new home in a much better school district and he attended public schools in 9th-12th grade. His first semester in the public school, he had a bit of a weird schedule because he was ahead of them in some areas and behind them in others, due to the different curricula. To make his schedule work, he was placed in a 1st period geography class, taught by an assistant football coach, that was basically a class to help the football players make their GPA. By that time, he had pretty much travelled the world with me, so he knew more geography than the coach/teacher. He pretty much ended up teaching the course. Around October, his mom called me and said that she was concerned that he wasn't actually learning anything in the geography course, and she would like to see if they could find something else. I replied, "Let me get this straight. He's the new kid in school and he's best buds with all the football team. I think that's exactly where we want him." She was like, "I never thought of it that way."
