Rice Qbs
ran across something the other day which started me to wonder about QBs in Rice FB history. Seems to me the clear top 5 are:

Chase Clement
Tommy Kramer
Frank Ryan
King Hill
Tobin Rote

I think one could argue that these are in the next few:
Bert Emanuel
Donald Hollas
Taylor McHargue
Chad Nelson**
Kyle Herm**

**more runners, really.

Though Chase has the numbers, I think TK gets my vote for the GOAT.

Thoughts?

Partial to the Donald, but Chase would get my vote for goat.

RE: Rice Qbs
Depends on how you define 'greatest'. Is that the greatest contribution to a Rice team, most valuable for a Rice team, or do you throw in how well they did professionally after Rice to the mix?

If the latter, no one stacks up to Tommy Kramer, and Hollas is a clear second.

If either of the former, would be a tough choice between Kramer and Clement. I might lean to Clement on that. Hollas would probably be third there in my view.

Frank Ryan won an NFL championship, and then came back to Rice to teach math. That's pretty special.

What, no love for Greg Willig?
Clement was the best college golf qb Rice ever had, and he is probably the all-time Rice mvp, although Froggy Williams might have something to say about that.

Kramer made several all-american lists. Clement did not. TK also played against a much tougher college schedule.

I'd think Ryan would be second on this list ... and probably King Hill 3rd (All-American at Rice, 1st player taken in the 1958 draft, longer NFL career than Donald Hollas).

Yes. Using those criteria, I would put Hollas first, then Chase. I went to TK's first game - a 28-0 loss. He did not lift the team to many wins, although he was was probably the best talent.

I should vote for Donald as #1 out of loyalty. He *was* with us on an intramural softball team for two years; his cousin Will was with us for three.

We were a bunch of sci-engi types with those two ringers with us. But good god you could feel it when Don made a big throw from center field..... and for a couple of minutes as well.....

He lifted his teams to be competitive with the top of the SWC, plus he was such a good athlete that he spent two years as the starting safety before taking the reins.

I am sure he made your team of sci-eng types better.

That is, until Feb 2nd, 2020...

1. Frank Ryan
2. King Hill
3. Tommy Kramer
4. Mark Comalander (Why is he on this list? Hmmm..)
5. Donald Hollas
6. Chase Clement

The all-time top ten, by rating with more than 100 pass attempts, are:

1. Driphus Jackson 142.5
2. Chase Clement 137.9
3. Bert Emanuel 137.1
4. Kyle Herm 134.2
5. King Hill 126.5
6. Taylor McHargue 126.4
Here's where it gets interesting...
7. Tyler Stehling 122.9
8. Nick Fanuzzi 121.1
9. Frank Ryan 121.1
and here's where it gets really interesting...
10. Shawn Stankavage 113.5

Hollas is #11. Wiley Green, with 88 attempts, is between Stankavage and Hollas at 112.6

What is not in the statistics is that Tobin Rote, Frank Ryan, and King Hill played in the day when they had to go two way - offense and defense. Tobin Rote was before my time, but King played both ways and was a good defensive back. Frank was primarily an offense-only person as the rules allowed three substitutions when the ball changed hands. The other unquantifiable dimension is the change in the game from a basic ground-oriented offense to the "Air Raid" offense.

We'll never be able to prove the "best", but it is fun trying.

I'd take Chase Clement over all of them. He was a natural passer. I think he's better than Kramer, even though he never played professionally.

???

OK, it's not the NFL ... but Chase led the Las Vegas Locomotives to the (professional) United Football League's 2010 title ... and he was the Championship Game's MVP.
