RE: Most heralded recruit ever?
The point, squeak, answering your earlier, now-deleted post.........is two-fold I guess. Since I've recently been labeled pedantic, I think I should at least occasionally delve into that realm, right?
But seriously, I find it mildly frustrating having to try and track down info that may have been in 4 different threads. The recent confusion over "Recruits 2019-2020", and it's various other similar threads being a great example. There were even quite a few posts about that year in last year's recruiting thread. It's not my web site, not my internet, and I really don't have a beef with whatever anyone posts here (unless it's that often-banned poster who shall not be named). I only wrote what I did to try and 'clean up' the board, and make things easier to follow. I know I probably search the archives more than most here, and some, or most, will just do the easier thing and start a new thread. Really nothing wrong with that - but it can confuse the issue and make searching more cumbersome.

All that said...........I think you mistook the degree of my reaction. It's not unreasonable to start a new thread on this topic if it hasn't been discussed in almost 9 years (altho I think almost certainly it has). Especially since we've had some fairly highly-touted incomings since then. But isn't it more reasonable to append the older ones? (Maybe not; that's really at least partially a rhetorical question.) One could see how opinions change, or don't, over the years. One can see how older posters no longer here (and who likely had more experience with earlier-era players) might rate, say, an Avery Marshall, compared to more recent touted players. Or a Morris Tampa, or a Scott Place, or a D.C. Smith, or a Jason Niblett, or a Willie Malone, etc. etc. If one goes back and reads those 9- and 11-year old posts, one will see posters, and knowledge, that will escape newer readers without that historical context. To me, that's added value and is worth keeping at least semi-fresh, instead of being buried on page 48 of this site. Just my opinion. But I hope it shows the point in minimizing the number of threads that are the same topic.

p.s. - I saw your initial post, but wasn't in a situation where I couldn't react to it - which is just as well. But I've got a pretty thick skin, so.................

p.p.s. - Now you should go open another thread about "Who's your favorite Buc of all-time?"

I was thinking more along the lines of ''Who's your favorite poster of all time?''

Not really, he was the cousin( I think of an assistant on the women's team, she convinced LeForce to go watch him and the rest is history.
Talford would have probably been higher but since he also wanted to play baseball I think the double whammy of taking a chance on a small town kid who was also going to play baseball made a few bigger programs backup. One or the other, maybe but not both.

Trey has given us a lot of that, too, if not the full list:

How it came about the Swift came to ETSU

Correct. That has been mentioned/discussed many times on this board. Here's Trey's version of it:

Woods and Swift discuss the olden days

Trey Williams has written another article on Tommy Woods, and instead of dragging up the "New ESPN article" thread, this will better serve the purpose. Some good stuff, including quotes from Clem Haskins and Kretzer:

another tribute article about Tommy Woods

Some interesting names. I think the late Chris White should be on the list, who was tragically lost before ever setting foot on campus. Would/should have been the heir apparent to Mister during LeForce's first recruiting class I believe. He was very highly touted .

Does anybody have information on Chris White? I tried researching to no avail.

I'm pretty sure he was a top 50 recruit if my memory serves me correct. However this was well before all the recruiting ratings/companies that are widely available now and at our disposal so I may be off but don't think by much. I remember Chris Dortch (of Blue Ribbon Basketball fame) was certainly a believer in his talents. If I remember correctly he died from a tragic drowning accident while on his Senior beach trip. Others may want to add and hope they do.

Don't if this helps on Chris White. An article on player injury that mentions Chris White of Matoaca High School.https://www.dailypress.com/news/dp-xpm-19931208-1993-12-08-9312080307-story.html Hope link works. Corey Alexander University of Virginia injury article. Says White died of an enlarged heart.

Thank you islandpark and I stand corrected. Tragic nonetheless for all involved.

We had a few transfers but got them as a freshman I would say Corrie Johnson and Courtney Pigram are the two biggest gets.

RE: Most heralded recruit ever?
I post this only (or mostly - see bottom quote) for the mentions by Trey concerning Corrie Johnson, Doggett, Herman, and Patterson - as referenced by Shane Williams:

Trey and Shane Willams dish on the ETSU teams of that era

"Johnson and Williams had played against ETSU players such as Jennings and Calvin Talford at Carver while at Science Hill.

The Les Robinson-Alan LeForce era began to fade fast with that 14-14 season, but the Buccaneers still had plenty of personnel with post Tony Patterson and guards Robert Doggett, Corrie Johnson and Geoff Herman, the latter of whom played at Chattanooga Tyner when it lost to Science Hill in the state championship when Williams was a sophomore.

Williams was impressed with the games of Johnson and Doggett.

“ETSU had some talent,” Williams said. “And it was a pretty good rivalry because, you know, Mister (Jennings) and them going down there and beating UT a couple of times before that. UT was trying to get back — trying to get that rivalry in hand.”

-------------------------------
Also note:

"Science Hill’s current leading scorer, Jamar Livingston, played for Williams at TCCA last year. And Livingston’s dad Keilan said Williams is the primary reason his son is getting interest from the likes of ETSU, Central Florida and Tennessee Tech."

While there Troy Lee Michael made Sporting News. Lead the nation in field goal percentage.
Speaking of Winford King, I remember him on a break away from half court. One guy thought he would try to block his dunk and he slammed his arm against the rim. Thought he just about broke the guys arm.

My favorite amazing play from that year was when Troy Lee was out on a breakaway with a defender chasing him. King was trailing the play. Troy Lee could have easily and viciously dunked it, altho the defender wasn't far behind. But he chose to bounce it off the backboard (very obviously) to the trailing King, who needless to say punished the basket with it. The Dome went nuts. I'm sure some of you were also there for that. We can see that stuff in the pros not uncommonly today, but back then it was very novel and quite awe-inspiring. No doubt it would have been #1 on ESPN's Top 10 if that had been around back then.

King didn’t get much of a shot in the NBA, but this exhibition photo is sick. Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar!
