Because Boise is willing to host a Go5 bowl, while St. Louis is not willing to, and insists on trying to get a P5 bowl organized.

Mobile, Ala.

MAC vs. Sun Belt

-Its official. No longer will the MAC have to send its champion to Alabama. Between Detroit (B1G), Arizona (MWC), Frisco (AAC) the MAC can avoid playing in the SBC's back yard and be over matched by a win or two against their bowl opponent leading to more victories.

-The MAC has 7 bowls for 2020 according to what I have above but the MAC can only have 6. Detroit, Arizona, Boise and Myrtle Beach were just signed.

The AAC is not involved with Bahamas, Mobile or Camellia and is probably not interested. They have 4 bowls with the P5 and then Cure with SBC, slots in Boca and Frisco. They can only sign 7 games and a few extra slots in the Armed Forces bowl may be about all they can do.

SBC can only sign 5 bowls: Cure, Camelia, Mobile, New Orleans and Myrtle Beach. Myrtle Beach is 4 slots so they have 2 more to give for a shared bowl situation.

CUSA can sign 7 bowls and right now depending on how one does the accounting has anywhere from 5-6 so they should pick up a bowl game somewhere. They have lost the Gasparilla bowl to the SEC so about 5.5 slot right now, 6 with the Myrtle Beach addition.

-The MAC I will have to drop something and I believe it will be Mobile because they don't have a title sponsor in place so Camellia should be ahead on the financial offer.

Quick Lane (vs. B1G)
Arizona (vs. MWC)
Potato (vs. MWC)
Frisco/Boca (vs. AAC/CUSA)-3 slots each
Bahamas/Myrtle/Camellia (vs. CUSA/SBC)-4 slots each

I believe that is how the MAC is going to get to 6 bowls. Bahamas may stay MAC-CUSA completely and something else may be rotated in with Myrtle Beach. But this is about where the MAC is at this moment until some more announcements come in.

The bowl pool McMurphy is talking about I don't think is going to work in full that way as I think the AAC wants to have their games how they want them and the same with the SBC who with 5 regional tie-ins doesn't play outside of it.

I doubt the MAC would want to drop it for Birmingham. And I completely agree with you: It's a great bowl trip.

But where is the MAC planning to send its best teams? There are only so many to go around. If Mobile slips too far in the pecking order, maybe they would want to look in another direction.

I suspect we will lose one of the Alabama games or Boca Raton, but I don't have any inside information here at all.

I'd protect a presence in Boca Raton since it's a Florida bowl game and it involves CUSA and the SBC.

Another arrangement that could be on the chopping block is Frisco which has more strategic value for CUSA than it does the MAC. Perhaps the MAC could deal it to CUSA for a few slots in New Orleans.

RE: MAC Bowl Game Times Announced
Independence Bowl has now lost its ACC tie-in to go along with losing its SEC tie-in for the next cycle. For this reason the PAC is also backing out.

https://csnbbs.com/thread-879073.html

Could the MAC get involved here? The MAC can only have 6 guaranteed tie-ins.

Quick Lane (vs. B1G)
Arizona (vs. MWC)
Potato (vs. MWC)
Frisco/Boca (vs. AAC/CUSA)-3 slots each
Bahamas/Myrtle/Camellia (vs. CUSA/SBC)-4 slots each

Listed above is where I have the MAC right now. Unless the MAC is willing to give up slots somewhere I don't think we have room for it.

The Independence Bowl could be linked in rotation with the Frisco Bowl or the First Responder Bowl to spread slots around.

As it is right now, the ACC for example is committing 1 slot a year to the First Responder, Gasparilia and Birmingham bowls. PAC could do same and so could BYU. A mini P5 bowl pool with the bottom tier P5 games is starting to emerge as the P5 right sizes its bowl commitments instead of over signing like the have in past cycles.

Independence Bowl is rife with history and tradition. I would be through the roof if we landed it.

Participating in a longstanding bowl (11th oldest) is a good goal for our champion. Mobile just isn’t a bowl that should be hosting conference champions.

RE: MAC Bowl Game Times Announced
Quote:American Athletic Conference Bowl Lineup (2020-25)
Annual Appearances
Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman (Annapolis, Maryland)
Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl (Fort Worth, Texas)/SoFi Hawaii Bowl (Honolulu, Hawaii) – alternating years
Bowl game to be named – (Boston, Massachusetts)

Four Selections Annually From the Following
Birmingham Bowl (Birmingham, Alabama)
Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl (Tampa, Florida)
SERVPRO First Responder Bowl (Dallas, Texas)
Cheribundi Boca Raton Bowl (Boca Raton, Florida)
Frisco Bowl (Frisco, Texas)
AutoNation Cure Bowl (Orlando, Florida)
Myrtle Beach Bowl (Myrtle Beach, South Carolina)
New Mexico Bowl (Albuquerque, New Mexico)

https://theamerican.org/news/2019/7/16/f...ineup.aspx

AAC bowl lineup is out. Here are some of the direct impacts to the MAC.

-Bahamas Bowl now looks a solid MAC vs. CUSA tie-in situation.

-AAC is going in 4 slots for Boca Raton and Frisco. Most likely here CUSA and MAC also are in the rotation for 4 slots again.

-More pieces are filling in on the P5 bowl pool.

Gasparilla: AAC (4), ACC (2), SEC (6), CUSA?
Birmingham: AAC (4), ACC (2), SEC (6), CUSA?
First Responder: AAC (4), ACC (2), XII (3), CUSA?

These spots are down to CUSA and the PAC to fill with the idea when they don't fill ESPN can place Army/BYU in an opening.

-Myrtle Beach is going to have 4 AAC slots. The MAC is supposed to have 4 slots well so does leave CUSA out with the SBC as the host bowl that may be.

-The Independence Bowl is looking pretty open for a CUSA/MAC arrangement with 2 slots going to the SBC. The AAC isn't going in there and I bet the MWC is going to be using its last slots in the Armed Forces/First Responder bowl in DFW.

Where does this then leave the MAC?

Quick Lane (vs. B1G)
Arizona (vs. MWC)
Potato (vs. MWC)
Bahamas (vs. CUSA)
Frisco/Boca (vs. AAC/CUSA)-4 slots each
Myrtle (vs. AAC/SBC)-4 slots each

The MAC can only sign 6 bowls so how does it fit in the games in Alabama vs. SBC and/or Independence Bowl?

CUSA can sign 7 bowls so they are going to have to pick up the slack on the Alabama games, maybe sign both of them.

RE: MAC Bowl Game Times Announced
One idea I have is the Independence signing CUSA vs. MAC.

The MAC to make room could give 2 slots to the Bahamas Bowl to the SBC which still has 2 slots open.

CUSA would then take both the Alabama bowls off the MAC's hands where the MAC is always getting crushed against Troy/App St.

Then MAC first selection can go to the Independence with deals worked out if there is a better matchup in Detroit or Arizona.

I enjoyed my trips to Mobile. I'm not sure Shreveport would be an upgrade. But I guess we'll see what happens.

RE: MAC Bowl Game Times Announced
The problem with Alabama is its two games squarely on the turf the SBC where its the same 2 or 3 programs every year well seasoned to win a bowl vs. random MAC team that doesn't go bowling all the time.

Shreveport would be a chance to play CUSA West in a bowl and a more transient opponent. Ohio for example clocked UAB in the Bahamas Bowl 2 years ago as it was their first time in the post season in years.

That is what I would like to see other teams in the MAC do and I think they could without the Alabama SBC games. One is alright but two is suicidal.

I have done both, and I would agree that Mobile is a bit more fun.

RE: MAC Bowl Game Times Announced
The MAC bowl lineup appears set for 2020-25.

As I understand this, each year, the MAC will send teams to:

-- Detroit (Big Ten)
-- Tucson, Ariz. (Mountain West)
-- Nassau, Bahamas
-- Boise, Idaho (Mountain West)

In addition, each year, the MAC will send two teams to two of these bowls:
-- Boca Raton, Fla.
-- Montgomery, Ala.
-- Orlando (Cure Bowl)
-- Frisco, Texas
-- Mobile, Ala.
-- Myrtle Beach, S.C.
-- Albuquerque, N.M.

Overall, I like it.

Getting to Tucson, Nassau, & Boise, not easy or cheap on short term notice.

That is why I enjoy the games in Montgomery & Mobile, as they are drivable.

Frisco, Boca, & Orlando, should be easy, relatively inexpensive flights, with Myrtle Beach being drivable.

Just fly into Sky Harbor and rent a car to get to Tucson. Its only a two hour drive on I-10, which might be more exciting than driving to NIU from Toledo. LOL

Yeah flights into Phoenix are cheap af and just rent a car down to Tucson. Try El Charro!

New Mexico Bowl will be vs. Mountain West, so:

-- Detroit (Big Ten)
-- Tucson, Ariz. (Mountain West)
-- Nassau, Bahamas (G5)
-- Boise, Idaho (Mountain West)

In addition, each year, the MAC will send two teams to two of these bowls:

-- Orlando, Fla.

I think there's a good chance Camellia and Mobile will be Sun Belt only but all the unknowns could be any G5.

Excellent.

And let me repeat a point I've made before:

MAC and ESPN are partners or partner (the verb) so it means they do games on their family of networks and other things such as provide us bowl opportunities through the bowls owned by their 'subsidiary' (I assume that is how it is classified).
We get coverage for the basketball tourneys. Get on Sports Center for our highlights, etc. etc.

Playing (too) many mid-week FB games in November is not too much to pay for what ESPN is doing with and for us.

RE: MAC Bowl Game Times Announced
My highlights of the new bowl package.

-Back in Detroit. Ford Field is the type of venue that is worthy of a P5 level bowl and only hosts 1 game unlike the Gasparilla which is a second tier game played in the Tampa Bay Bucs stadium. Best tie-in yet with the B1G as an 8/9 pick of a 14 team conference. That means they should supply a team most of the time to the game.

-Sunshine state exposure. The MAC has increased its Florida bowl presence to 2 with the addition of the game in Orlando in Central Florida to go along with the game in Boca Raton in South Florida. Combined with Mobile which is adjacent to the Florida Panhandle and Bahamas right off the coast of Florida that's 4 excuses to take a vacation in Florida around a MAC bowl game.

-Myrtle Beach is a true "drivable" game for the MAC fan in South Carolina down I-77 in a state where a lot of Ohio-Michigan people vacation. Its definitely better for MAC fans than games in Louisiana which are too far to drive and not beach vacation areas.

-National bowl package. There is something to be said for what the MWC and SBC have in backyard bowls that are cost effective but I believe the three western bowls (Boise, Tucson, Albuquerque) gives the bowl package more of a national feel. The New Mexico bowl is rotated with a bunch of conferences so won't always be against the MWC. These games put the MAC's bowl package on the level of the AAC compared with say the MWC/SBC which are locked in regionally.

-The AAC has bowls in Birmingham and Tampa against the last pick of the SEC which may never supply a team (or if they do it will be something like Miss St/Vandy). I'd much rather have Mobile and Orlando in smaller venues than the desperate hope of a P5 opponent.

-In the previous bowl cycle, the MAC's 5 bowl game lineup was slightly worse than CUSA's and a step below the AAC. With the bowl upgrades its much closer in quality to the AAC and CUSA lineups, maybe slightly better 1 through 6 without the funky arrangements against the P5 which will end up being 6-6 UMass, Liberty and NMSU most years.

RE: MAC Bowl Game Times Announced
Ways the MAC bowl package could be improved.

-A second P5 game against the ACC in Indianapolis or St. Louis. The ACC has two games against the AAC so they are more open to G5 opponents and they have 15 teams so need more bowl games.

That would allow the MAC to push Boise off onto CUSA which as a larger conference needs more tie-ins. SBC pushed the Arizona Bowl over to us so it could be done.

-Bowl in Virginia Beach instead of Montgomery. The original reason why Montgomery was certified had to do with the NCAA moratorium on bowls in South Carolina. If it wasn't for that moratorium this game would have been in Charleston. Now we have another game in Myrtle Beach since the moratorium is lifted.

Virginia doesn't have any bowl games or major league sports so I can see where a bowl at ODU's stadium would be well supported.

This is wrong per Brett McMurphy.

Arizona, New Mexico and Potato each feature a MWC team through 2025.
