RE: 2019 WAC Baseball Tournament
In case anyone forgot, Sac State has a win over the #1 ranked baseball team in college baseball, UCLA. So they do have talent.

Yup, Sac State sent home NMSU and the WACPlayeroftheYear Nick Gonzalez. I guess the question of Sac State pitching vs NMSU hitting was answered, at least for this year.

Our bullpen has to be on fumes at this point of the tourney. We'll see how it goes tonight. GCU looked damn good when they spanked NMSU last night. A repeat performance tonight and GCU will be forming a dog-pile on the mound in a few hours.

New Mexico State beat GCU 2 out of 3 on the road.

New Mexico State beat Sacramento State 2 out of 3 on the road.

New Mexico State won the WAC Regular Season Championship.

I disagree. I don't think the question was answered. NMSU had a successful season. It's tough we couldn't repeat in Phoenix but that doesn't change the fact the recent success has improved our recruiting high school kids. NMSU has an impressive incoming freshman recruiting class, and have several commits from current juniors. We are also landing the top prep talent in the state of New Mexico. It's an exciting time for Aggie baseball fans.

It's answered. One team is still playing, the other is not. No doubt NMSU (and GCU and GCU) had amazing regular seasons as they all share the regular season title. It was well deserved by all three programs...

...but this is no doubt a disappointing finish for NMSU. They didn't even reach the championship game(s) after piling up a massive amount of wins. The WACT disappointment does not take away from am outstanding regular season. I believe Sac State had an equally disappointing performance in 2012.

NMSU will no doubt be fine in the future. Rock solid program.

It's disappointing but it still was a successful season. We led the nation in batting average, hits, and runs, and finished 8th in the nation in home runs.

Sacramento State does have some good pitching, but still only managed to go 2-2 vs NMSU this season.

It still doesn't change the fact that New Mexico State will be hanging up a WAC Regular Season Championship banner. If Sacramento loses tomorrow, it would be all for nothing. As much as I hate GCU, I hope they win tomorrow.

No team has ever done what Sac State has done in the WACT this season. Maybe we win tomorrow, maybe not. But NMSU couldn't even reach the championship round of the WACT in their amazing season.
Hornet pitching >>> NMSU hitting.
Here's your season ending, good night 04-cheers:

I think five schools in the WAC had a successful baseball season. A look at the WAC conference records and RPI of the top five:

NMSU 19-8 RPI 112
CBU 19-8 RPI 121
UTRGV 19-8 RPI 115
Sac State 18-9 RPI 124
GCU 18-9 RPI 104

This was a really competitive conference, with three schools sharing the WAC regular season title and the other two schools in the WAC Championship game. If the bottom five were not so bad, the conference might have had an outside shot at an at-large bid.

Congrats to Sac State, defeating GCU 5-4 for the WAC Championship. The Hornets eliminated every WAC team along the way. Good luck in the NCAA baseball tournament!

I agree. Not much separating the top teams this season. Any of those teams winning the WACT should not have been a surprise to anyone.

Thanks!!! WAC Champs baby!!!!

Historic run in the WACT that we probably never see ever again by anyone. Per the Hornetsports recap, here are the tournament totals for the Hornets. Truly amazing:

Quote:In total this week, Sacramento State played seven games, going 6-1. The Hornets hit .251 with seven home runs, 10 doubles, and a triple, outscoring their opponents 36-24.

Bacho led the team in average, home runs, and RBIs. Keith Torres, despite hitting just .125, posted a .364 OBP and scored a tournament-high eight runs.

The pitching staff had a 2.73 ERA and held opponents to just a .211 batting average against. They struck out 40 and combined to record three saves.

Congrats to the Hornets. Damn impressive play all around. Much respect also to the small, but vocal and mighty contingent of Sac St fans in attendance who endured all the way through. Even I got a little pleasure out of them getting the chance to stick it right back to the fair-weather Havocs who turned up the last 3 days.

Thanks. Damn good season for GCU. You guys will be a contender year in and year out.

And I think the fans, specifically the Plant Lady, was a huge part of the Hornets run in the tourney.

For sure. I went over and talked with plant lady just after the Hornets knocked off the Aggies on Saturday. Let her know that the broadcast had turned her into somewhat of a celebrity for those watching the tourney on ESPN+. She seemed a little confused, but was still kind and gracious. I might have been able to do without pool noodle guy who we ended up sitting near yesterday.

I got messages from friends who knew where I was sitting, asking if I was the one being so loud that it was drowning out the play by play guys. Nope. That was the pool noodle crew. Haha.

Congrats to Sac State for winning the WACt championship. It was a great comeback story! Just sorry it had to happen against GCU. It seems GCU is always the bridesmaid but never the bride. Hopefully GCU can get a WACt championship within the next three years before CBU comes in and starts to dominate.

Don't forget that Nick Gonzales lead the entire nation in batting average and returns next year for his junior year.

Per the MLB, here are the draft criteria for eligible/ineligible player groups:

Certain groups of players are ineligible for selection, generally because they are still in school. The basic categories of players eligible to be drafted are:
  • High school players, if they have graduated from high school and have not yet attended college or junior college
  • College players, from four-year colleges who have either completed their junior or senior years or are at least 21 years old
  • Junior college players, regardless of how many years of school they have completed

Unless Gonzales has hit 21 years of age, it doesn't appear that he is MLB Draft eligible based on this criteria. That said, I am looking forward to this year's draft as the WAC should be well represented. GCU could easily see guys like Quin Cotton and Kona Quiggle go in the first 10 rounds. I would also expect the exceptional defense of guys like Preston Pavlica and Tyler Wyatt gets them a look in later rounds. Given how competitive our league was this season, I'm guessing teams in the top half of the league have at least a handful of guys who could reasonably expect the same.

Thanks for the info. I always thought it was fair game after HS.

Gonzales isn't draft eligible until after his junior season. Joey Ortiz is draft eligible. It will be interesting where he lands in the draft.
