RE: Tina Langley Signed to New 5-Year Contract
Langley doesn't strike me as somebody who would sign a new contract and then leave in the same offseason, if her contract even allows it, but worth noting that Cal's head coach Lindsey Gottlieb left to be an assistant with the Cavs and I imagine Langley would've been a legit target for that job had it opened a few months ago.

Not to mention that Brian Mann is now an employee of the Cal athletic department....so there is a connection there...

You really think Coach Langley would take the Cal job with the high cost of living there? (06-13-2019 10:03 AM)Houston Owl Wrote: Not to mention that Brian Mann is now an employee of the Cal athletic department....so there is a connection there...

Tina and her coaching staff are the featured speakers at next week's annual Owl Club Happy Hour/Dinner for big donors.

RE: Tina Langley Signed to New 5-Year Contract
Cal would need to pay a minimum of 30% more than what we pay just to be competitive with the averages... and if she wants the quality of life, it's more like 70%.
I'm not kidding at all

Langley is #1 on this list, but there are plenty of other good possibilities besides her. I think assistants at Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford and UCLA would all be strong candidates. I could see Langley leaving eventually but I think it's more likely after next year than right now (I hate to even speculate but she and Mulkey could be a team somewhere for Nancy's 5th/graduate year). Cal is facing a major rebuild having lost its senior post star, and then their best underclass player transferred to Louisville.

Fun evening with Tina, her staff and fellow alums. As successful as this past year's team was, the excitement for this coming year's team is off-the-charts. Tina talked about how she was sold on the Rice job after her first interview with JK at a Maryland hotel 4 years ago, several days before her Maryland squad departed for the Final Four....and she said her feelings were only reinforced during her trying first season on campus due to both the wide-ranging support she received and the work ethic and comraderie of the team. She talked a little bit about recruiting (in addition to casting a broad net across the U.S., they've started building an international network, though she acknowledged this will take a couple years to bear fruit). Really enjoyed meeting and talking in-depth to her growing staff. In addition to the all-conference talent of Erica and Nancy, the expectation is that both Jasmine and Sydne will continue to improve and compete for all-conference honors, and that at least 3 of the 5 new recruits will be competing for serious playing time.
With regards to this year's schedule, she emphasized the need to sell out Tudor for the A&M home game (she expects them to be preseason Top 5 ranked), as an early win in that one could really catapult us in the polls. She also highlighted the Arkansas-Little Rock game.
BTW, for those who have yet to give to the Owl Club this calendar year, you still have two weeks (until June 30). You can call Shu or Mike Melendez, who took over the Development job when Brian Mann left for Cal.

Walt: great summary — and great seeing you there.
Coach Langley has optimism combined with realism in a way that is inspiring.

Cal hired its ex-assistant Charmin Smith today. That should pretty much eliminate any additional Langley moving speculation for 2019.
