You don't know that. There are bust in the top 5 of the NBA draft every year much less with a guy who hasn't played a college game yet. How many of these can't miss 7footers coming out of high school have done nothing in the NBA even if they were drafted high? Tons.
Van Fleet already has an established career averaging 11ppg and 5apg on NBA champ at 24 years old, lots of people would take that floor of an NBA career all day everyday, and he still has a few years to improve more.
What impressed me is he started at Shooting Guard last night, or I guess you could say 6-1 Lowry did depending on how you want to allocated their roles. He was playing off the ball a lot at 5-11 or whatever he really is.
Fred can very well play himself into a Max contract this year

I'm sure there are a couple dumb GM's with cap space eating a hole in their pockets. That doesn't mean Fred deserves the max though.
Depends. If plays like he has been since the finals last year... He probably deserves it.

Do you mean in the one game he's played (which went to overtime)? Better sign Derrick Rose up for that max too since he dropped 50 last season.
Van Vleet averaged 14 ppg in the finals. Those aren't max numbers. He was 117th in the league in scoring last season and he's a liability on defense. He's not getting near the max.

He’s not a defensive liability. Watch his defense and not just his 6’ height. If that’s what you think, you’ve not watched. Whether he gets a max contract or not. He’s smart, he shoots well, he gives max effort, he backs down from no one, he passes it well, he moves the offense, creates spacing, is tough, and he shoots it well.

...He is guarded by Steph Curry who can't guard a door on his own much less a moving body.... He benefited from being on a team with Kawhi. He doesn't create turnovers. He doesn't rebound. He was the 42nd best 3PT shooter last season.

You do realize he was actually receiving votes for finals MVP right..... Mainly for his defense.... He is far from a defensive liability.

The Tigers are out to prove doubters wrong. “We’re underrated,” (Tyler) Harris said. “That added more fire for us.”
"If I have the talent, and I feel like we can do it, I’m going to say it," said Memphis head coach Penny Hardaway. "And if that offends people, then so be it. It’s just who we are. We feel like anything is possible, that’s all I’ll say."
noteables-
- sees everyone in country/league getting waivers, feels optimistic about theirs
- no clue who will lead in scoring, 6+ options, lots of scoring on the team
- 6'8 soph feron hunt will shoot 3s and dribble way more (will play guard and big upcoming season)..could average a double double if he put his mind to it
- with full roster feels they can win a ton of games
- AAC top 5 basketball league
- memphis is the new kentucky

This is another good endorsement for Newton, from a random meet a player article with Miles James.
Quote:What teammates have impressed you with their game thus far?
"Everyone brings something different. I love watching Tristen (Newton) play. I think as a freshman, he just believes in himself. He's got that swag on the court. I think he can grow to be a great point guard and great player. I'm impressed with everybody though."

More positive nuggets about Newton coming out of camp.
Rodney Carney and DJ Stephens were under the radar recruits, but both were productive as Tigers and each played professionally. Perhaps Newton is a similar hidden gem.

If we didn't have anyone good returning maybe a statement like this could be taken with more of a grain of salt. However Gardner is preseason 2nd team, so you would think he would be the easy answer. Granted his game isn't flashy but it's still a positive statement about Newton.
