Woah, slow down there buddy. I'm not sure if we've beaten anyone of significance just yet. Long way to go to be in the conversation with the 2015 squad that went 24-8 (12-4), won the CAA Tournament, and included a regular season victory over UNC.

I meant to throw "start to the season" in there.

Sorry 2015 ladies if you're out there... no disrespect. lol

First SJ is a she, and now this? Get your sh*t together man! 03-lmfao

For accuracy's sake, yes, this year's team is off to a better start than the 2015 squad. That team started 4-0 before losing to Sacramento St.

I don't feel like going back through the records so I'll just assume 5-0 is our best start in school history, considering the '15 squad was the only one in our history to make the NCAA Tournament.

Huge match @ Duke tonight at 7!

Further, I'm not solely interested in reading about men's basketball. There's plenty of sports at UNCW to cover. Our volleyball team is currently having a great season, and perhaps their best of all time.

What I really enjoyed about the last person in the position (Alex) was his attendance at games, providing quick pre and post game/match videos and sometimes interviews. It felt like we were a part of what he was reporting on, and it developed and cultivated a genuine excitement about whatever event was taking place.

I don't think any of us are meaning to say she's not good at her job. Just casual observations on some of what really seemed to work well from a alumni and fan perspective.

Don't disagree. Alex was awesome but was way out performing his pay check I'm sure with the podcasts and such. Almost like he was building his resume for another job...

It is getting to the point that (at least the Gatehouse papers) none of them have decent print editions. Friday night high school games are not reported in the paper until Sunday. What crap. They would much prefer people to subscribe to the online versions. Cheaper (for them) that way.

Hello everyone,
Haven't been around much since February, but I'm trying to make my way back into the UNCW fold after a little separation. (Plus, I've just missed you knuckleheads so much)

First off, I appreciate all the kind words about my tenure as the UNCW beat writer. It was a pleasure to provide that coverage for you all. The most fun I had during my 10 years in journalism.

That said, a lot has changed since I left in February. In fact, a lot was about to change as I walked out the door. Joey now has the responsibility of education coverage as well as what is called "morning cops" shift. Basically, one day a week, she's got to be in the office early and handle anything breaking. That's a role I never had to tackle during my tenure. I was all UNCW all the time. She, unfortunately, hasn't gotten that luxury.

I know Joey is excited to get things rolling with basketball season. There's been a lot of change within the paper, both locally and on a national level. Continue to have patience.

Looking forward to keeping up with the Seahawks from here on out. Both soccers are doing well it looks like. Hopefully basketball can follow along and then baseball/softball in the spring.

Talk to y'all soon.

Alex, you're a gentleman! Appreciate that insight into Joey's professional duties and why things may be shaped a little different recently. Looking forward to having your voice around here more often during the season as well.

Hope you're enjoying your new gig!

This is the final straw. This is why I’ve written Alex’s replacement off.

This kind of worthless reporting. Considering all the storylines in how well our team stayed with UNC or how cool it was that the MAJORITY of fans chose to wear their teal and support the Seahawks... the Star News runs this trash and decides to post it on the “Dub Hub” Facebook page.

Absolute trash.

Oh, and in the case of the student pictured who claims she supports UNCW in every game but this one because “UNC” is in her blood? Why bother? We don’t need trash halfway fans. It’s not in your blood either or you’d be... I dunno... a student at UNC.

Finally a good article on anything of substance having to do with UNCW basketball. Not shocking at all, it is a guest opinion piece by none other than Alex Riley who is now the communications director for Pender County Schools.

Saw a tweet that Joey has taken a new job covering ECU athletics. While coverage suffered I attribute it more to how the Star News chose to cover UNCW, they had her doing more general reporting than sports due to have such a small staff Good luck to her

good for her. The coverage will now match the quality of the athletics :)

I'm sure she was a nice person. Professionally though, good riddance. Star News responsibility aside, her articles weren't very good when she actually covered UNCW anyways.

I just can't imagine that as much positive that Alex Riley brought to the Star News due to his competence and motivation to find new ways of drawing interest to the Star News coverage that they would take such a drastic turn away from that. I'm sure they did play a role, but she was clearly not very good at the job.

Here's to hoping we get a new reporter with actual reporting & writing skills, and not someone who writes articles based on social media reactions.

In my opinion, the person for the job is on staff already. Jackson Fuller, who covers local high school sports currently. He did an article with Siddle right after the hire that I thought was good. His high school sports coverage has been top notch too. I would really like to see him get the gig.

Yep, we were spoiled over the years with great coverage and now no beat writer. Well, if the team gets good again as expected, then it will really be a shame if they continue to drop the ball.

Felt appropriate to put this here.
I doubt we will ever have another full time sports writer

Ed Hardin of the News & Record is an excellent reporter and columnist. He covered UNCG and A&T very well in recent years. Maybe his last column was an obituary for a life long friend who co-coached youth basketball teams with him. They coached Chris Paul and his older brother 20 years ago. The newspaper business is very sad these days.

One of UNCW's assets is being in a decent sized city with 2 tv stations and a daily newspaper. The newspaper means less every year.

I wonder if UNCW will work out a deal with Capitol Broadcasting this year to put some games on WILM. They dont have to worry about tickets and Capitol already does our radio. Other CAA teams have their home games on TV so maybe we finally will take advantage of the natural advantages we have
