MyBB Question for UTEP / El Paso folks (Hoops)
ECU just signed a basketball player from El Paso that seemingly came out of nowhere. Nobody on the paid message boards had ever mentioned the kid, and he wasn’t on any of the offer lists.

Apparently he had been a “silent commit” for a while... I’m curious if any of you know the story on this kid? He put up great numbers in high school and has great size for PG (6’5”)... but I don’t see that UTEP offered him.

Tristen Newton - PG - 6’5” 175lbs
Burges HS - El Paso, TX

37.4 PPG
9.2 RPG

Those are STUPID numbers.

Any thoughts??

RE: Question for UTEP / El Paso folks (Hoops)
He is a good player but played against inferior players and teams in El Paso. UTEP is loaded with some big time recruits at his position. Coach Terry just got here a year ago so he never really established a relationship with Tristan, which is why UTEP did not offer him. His older brother played at Evansville this past year and had similar numbers in high school 28.5 pts and 7.1 rebounds. His brother averaged 3.1 pts and 2.3 rebounds this past year. He will be a good player but it will take until his junior year IMO.

I appreciate it.

Weak competition makes sense. You can't teach size, though. 6'5" playing the point is pretty special, IMO.

04-cheers

I hope he pans out... and maybe we can get UTEP on the schedule again soon.

He is the cousin of Aaron Jones so he might end up being really good. A lot of our fans wanted for UTEP to make him an offer. As Stan wrote we are loaded at his position. I’ll certainly be keeping an eye on his career and hopefully he helps you guys out.

Having a weird third-person message board persona is really lame, just so you know. 07-coffee3

While clt is at it, clt should focus on clt's own sh*tacular hoops, football, and baseball programs, and maybe a little less on P6 sigs. 04-cheers

Thanks to the UTEP folks who chimed in. Excited to see this kid in Greenville!

It's not going to take until his junior year. He looked awesome last night starting at point guard

20 points
4 assist
0 turnovers
3 rebounds
1 steal
1 block
3-5 from three
5-6 from FT
6-12 overall

That's a debut and I think we stole one here.

That's a hell of a debut! Glad he did so well and yes, looks like you got a steal there.

In a 12 point win against a VMI team that won 11 games last year.

Is a 12 point win bad? and if it was, it certainly wasn't his fault. He looked the part and then some.

I think it pretty much confirmed the WTF with his recruitment and how did a guy that averaged 38ppg and 9rpg leading the #5 team in Texas 5A and can jump out the gym have no offers. He made 88.3% of his FT on a near 500 shot sample so he has elite shooting potiental as well and probably already is a top FT shooter in the nation and can do this too....

We were without two projected starters, one Tremont Robinson is the #3 ranked JUCO in the nation this year (and only a sophmore) and Jackson who was a rotation player on an NCAA Virginia Tech team. Also a 3rd potiental starter LeDay cameback from a torn ACL in 8 months and has only practiced a week. He was clearly rusty off the bench so there is a lot more potiental help coming.

We got a little something going on here with Newton and Gardner who was already one of the best players in the AAC and only a sophmore.

RE: Question for UTEP / El Paso folks (Hoops)
A quick update for the El Paso/UTEP folks...

Tristen Newton is a REALLY bright spot on this ECU team. He ideally would have redshirted, but our top 2 point guards missed significant time due to injuries at the beginning of the season, and Newton had to play a lot.

He just hit a game-winning 3 pointer with 2 seconds remaining to upset 12-2 SMU this weekend.

He's averaging 27 minutes per game.

Some notable performances...

vs VMI - 20pts (His first college game)
vs Evansville - 18pts
vs Liberty - 10pts
vs Campbell - 11pts
vs SMU - 11pts

From the SMU game... Newton hits big shots at 2:10, 2:20, and the game winner at 6:25.
