The seacat transfer was definitely not due to any culture issue. I will say, though, that both the Malinowski and Whitman transfers should be partially contributed to the culture and chemistry within the locker room. It is no secret that they both did not care for Coach Shaver. With that being said, that is why we had outstanding assistants, to calm the storm whenever players got frustrated with their head coach.

Malinowski and Whitman transferred because both had clearly lost starting jobs for the upcoming season, and they both rightfully determined that if they were going to be just a rotation piece, that was doable at a P5. Going back to at least 2006, we never had a projected starter leave. And then in two months, we had four of them. That right there is the difference between Tony and turmoil.

I had it from a very reliable source that Hunter had a bad drinking problem that was manifested with the DUI. Several ocassion, during his Freshman year, he was carried into the dorm after passing out. Hi problems were self induced. I hope he has gotten them straightened out. that is why he didn't get much support from the staff like Britt did!!

Longwood lost two of their staff this week, and Austin Shaver has started following some Longwood folks, as well as, recruits. Assume his addition to the staff may be forthcoming.

Stanford’s official MBB account started following WMTribeMBB as well as the MBB accounts for Cal State Fullerton, Montana, Long Beach St, Santa Clara, UMES, Oklahoma, Butler, Mizzou, San Jose St, San Francisco, and San Diego. Is that Stanford’s non-conference slate for next year?

Probably. We were originally going to play Stanford and Oklahoma (among a few other notable games) before the coaching staff was dismissed. I'm assuming parts of the schedule got scrapped with all of the changes, but looks like Stanford will be on the schedule.

20% of D-1 men’s basketball players entered the portal this year.

https://www.app.com/story/sports/college...276375001/

In one year, college student athletes have taken on the palor of free agents / mercenaries with no loyalty to teammates / donors / schools.

Why should anyone donate any money to any NCAA athletics’ program?

I'm sure supporters of the major programs love it. It erases any recruiting missteps by their coaching staffs. Coaches can nudge less utilized players out the door and pick through the midmajor ranks for whatever they want in proven D1 players.

I wonder how many coaching turn overs occurred and how many of the 20% were on those teams.

Question to be posed on 6/18?

Pretty interesting changes. Moving to the international distance doesn't change too much. Most guys were shooting well beyond the line already. Shot clock starts at 30 but resets to 20 seconds on an offensive rebound.

I think you're underestimating the distance change. There are a lot of 30-35% shooters who will quickly become 20-25% shooters. It might not affect most good shooters, but it will have a large impact on marginal to bad shooters.

Then they will have to master the mid-range shot, like we had to do. Before dunking and the three point shot!!

And that was the real reason for the change, apparently. Too many players were able to be threats from the old 3 line and this should definitely be a deterrent for those players. It should also help open up the mid range area for more dribble drives and 15 footers.

These are the stated justifications, from the NCAA's website:

-Making the lane more available for dribble/drive plays from the perimeter.

-Slowing the trend of the 3-point shot becoming too prevalent in men’s college basketball by making the shot a bit more challenging, while at the same time keeping the shot an integral part of the game.

-Assisting in offensive spacing by requiring the defense to cover more of the court.

It will definitely increase the spacing and open up the lane, making drives and cutting easier and more effective for the offense. Anyone who has ever played with the international or NBA line knows this to be true.

I'm not sure how much it will slow down the trend of teams taking more 3s. Taking a lot of 3s just makes sense from a pure numbers perspective. You only have to shoot 33% on 3s to equal 50% on 2s. Midrange jumpers and long range jumpers that aren't 3s are the worst shots in basketball. Layups/paint shots and 3s are where it's at. Guys will get used to the new line quickly. It's not that big of a difference and many shots are already made from the distance. It will just create more of a premium on shooting in recruiting and development. If you don't have guys that can shoot you'll be at a large disadvantage. Big guys that can shoot will be very effective, as they'll be able to pull their defender even farther from the basket.

As you said, taking a lot of three only makes sense if you're hitting 33% or better. The distance change will change a lot of marginal shooters into bad shooters. I would hazard a guess that they have shot charts for at least the P5/G5 games that tell them where the point of diminishing returns is, and they think it's a lot closer to the international line than the college line. Put in terms of recent players, it wouldn't have affected Paul or Connor almost at all, but it would have a significant effect on Terry Tarpey.
