Certainly provides no ammunition for Nathan to feel returning to the team would give him the coaching and environment needed for his development next year, as opposed to playing a year overseas.

Yeah, I mean look at how many players have gone from borderline to draft locks by swapping their senior year for one European pro season.
If pro ball is his primary goal, taking a year and working full time with a skill trainer, strength coach, and nutritionist would definitely be appealing. If getting his degree and competing for a championship is what he wants, W&M is a fine choice. It really comes down to what he wants in his heart and what his advisors tell him.

How old is Knight? Watching the NFL draft, where Juniors are 22 years old, you have to think if he is on the younger end of the spectrum, there doesnt need to be a hurry. He is still physically immature for the NBA and could finish college, spend a year training in the G-league and most likely make the leap during that year. I dont see him getting drafted and playing immediately in the NBA without gaining 20 lbs of muscle.

Can you name one player that has ever done this (excluding those who were ineligible to play in college)? I can’t think of any.

You are correct. I can't think of any that sat out all together. But I also can't think of any US player that went to Europe or the G-League and raised their NBA draft stock. I agree that unless he is a 1st round pick, his best play is coming back and out producing last season. The key to being drafted is projecting potential. Nate could dominate in the minors, but more than likely struggle now with the speed and physicality playing against grown men.

I presented the sitting out merely as an option more than a real possibility.

“Former William & Mary staffer Luke Ford remains a hot name to join the Longwood staff. No word on whether or not that would be the DBO role or as an assistant. Ford is from the Charlottesville area and went to UVA.”

Just moving this back to the top in case there is any news to share.

During our silent period, there are a lot of postings on the JMU Board about ODU's record fundraising.

1. Return of Chase & LJ
2. Recommitment of Cam Brown
3. Get a couple more 2019 commits or transfers to fill the Pierce/Milon void.

Nate will work his situation out, but it is out of the hands of the staff.

Not criticizing any of this, just moving it back to the top because I think it was a good summary of what the key goals are/were.

I would add to that, complete a high quality staff who recruit well. We've yet to fill the Director of Basketball Operations position. Luke Ford should have been a top priority to retain.

It may have been out of our hands if Nate decided to stay in the draft, but it is/was in Fischer's hands to assure we have a quality big man coach on staff. If Nathan is going to believe that returning for his senior year is a viable option for his development, then Fischer needs to lay the groundwork that someone is focusing on the feedback Nathan is getting at team workouts, and assure there is a plan in place tailored to that feedback. We need to get Nate in elite big man camps this summer. Likewise, Van Vliet and Harvey need the same development.

No snark. Just a good list and we can see how we measure up. None of these off season priorities seem out of whack. So far, as of May 7th, #2 on the list is a no. The other 4 are TBD. For clarity, Mr. J's original post was 4/26(not today).

Luke Ford was leaving W&M this year well before Tony was dismissed. He had actually overstayed by a year or two the initial staff position as Dir of Basketball Operations...3 years is the usually term...and had to move on to an assistant coaching position somewhere as the next move up.

He did a great job here.

Thank you! As someone close to this situation it is upsetting to see this person continue to post their incorrect speculations as fact.

I think he meant John Ford. John Ford was definitely on his way out after The Searchers.

I’m posting this comment in this thread because I don’t want it to be about any particular guy who transferred or stayed. But I just don’t believe that we could have had this amazing team chemistry, with strong leadership and a full team of guys who would have each other’s backs no matter what, given how the collective team has responded to Tony’s firing. I’m not saying anyone made the wrong decision (except for Huge!) - and I actually think many of the decisions make a lot of sense - but nothing about how this has played out suggests we had a locker room with strong leadership and no fractures. In every sport I’ve ever played (granted none at the college level), I played first and foremost for my teammates. My coaches often came in at #2, but always far behind my brothers who I would go to battle with.

So something is missing for me. Maybe I’m wrong that there were team chemistry problems, and it was actually something else. But I’m just not buying it that the guys (collectively...I’m not talking about any single case bc I understand many of their decisions, especially the grad transfers) were so angry with our AD that they would leave a team they loved, a school they loved, and a new coaching staff that they at least saw some potential in because Tony was fired.

To what many others have said, at this point I wish the best for all the guys from last year’s team, and I’m ready to turn my attention to the guys who have stayed and root for them and the new staff, along with some light following and cheering for my fellow alums JP and Matt.

Face it, players left when Tony was fired. Enough said. Spin all of the excuses. Spin the crazy conspiracy theories. This never happened under Tony. The only reasonable explanation is that Huge made a terrible mistake.

Well...we had three transfers just two years ago, when I also thought we had team chemistry and leadership issues.

Huge made a terrible mistake. I’m not disagreeing with you.

All I’m saying is it doesn’t have to be as binary of a situation as many of you want it to be. There can be shades of grey here.

One left because he screw up.

One left because he wanted to play sooner.

One left because he figured on being a smaller fish in a bigger pond.

Most of our 2018 crew left because of a Huge disaster.

The seacat transfer was definitely not due to any culture issue. I will say, though, that both the Malinowski and Whitman transfers should be partially contributed to the culture and chemistry within the locker room. It is no secret that they both did not care for Coach Shaver. With that being said, that is why we had outstanding assistants, to calm the storm whenever players got frustrated with their head coach.
