That is John Branen's career record. This was such an underwhelming, safe, pick. I am sorry but I am not at all excited over this move. It's like going for the field goal on 4th and 1, when a TD wins the game.

RE: 56-43
That's not accurate. That would have been his career record before this past season -- it is now 81-51. Also, his first year at NKU was taking over a team that had just made the jump to Division I and was in its first year in the much tougher Horizon League. So his career record is kind of a silly thing to get caught up on anyway.

Maybe it doesn't work but this is kind of an absurd description of what he did at nku. He took over a new d1 program that was also upgrading conferences. He won 9 games his first year then made the tournament two of the next 3 years (including the program's first year of tournament eligibility) won two regular season championships and two conference tournament championships as well as making the NIT. Given the situation he walked into it's a pretty great mid major resume. Will it translate at UC's level? We can't know, but it's exactly what you're looking for as a mid major coach.

Think you need to take a deeper look. He was like 72-30 over the last 3 years and led NKU to a tournament appearance in its first year eligible.

He has shown the ability to recruit at both Alabama and VCU where he helped both land top 25 classes. At NKU he was also able to pull in several 3 star recruits, which is big for a school like NKU.

Worse cherry picking take Ive see in a while. I think Brannen is a solid hire, probably not the home run we were hoping for but we werent getting those anyway. Nate Oats wasnt available and UC made it clear they had to have a clean record (so no Forbes or Pitino).

I like that he is local. If he does well he should also stick around awhile like Cronin did. I like that stability.

RE: 56-43
As I posted in another thread, this selection was impacted by who was realistically interested from the available coach's pool. Not taking anything away from Coach Brannen's experience, abilities, and acumen, but there may not have been many quality candidates left to interview. At the end of the day, I'll trust and stand behind Mike Bohn. I know a lot of folks on this Board pissed and moaned when Big Fick was hired, especially after his 4-8 Year 1. In response to the OP, here is a comparison of the records of Huggs, Mick, and Brannen preceding Cincinnati:

Huggs
97-46 (.678) Akron
5 Seasons (2 Independent)
1 Regular Season Championship
1 Conference Tournament Championship
1 NCAA Tournament Appearance

Cronin
69-24 (.742) Murray State
3 Seasons
1 Regular Season Championship
2 Conference Tournament Championships
2 NCAA Tournament Appearances

Brannen
81-51 (.614) Northern Kentucky
4 Seasons
2 Regular Season Championships
2 Conference Tournament Championships
2 NCAA Tournament Appearances

I will point out, if you throw out his first season with the Norse (9-21) his last 3 seasons: 72-30 (.706). Overall, he is very comparable to our previous two coaches. In particular, his conference dominance stands out.

RE: 56-43
Copied this from Lance's blog:

Offense: His offensive style will excite a UC fan base craving a more aesthetically pleasing style of play.

NKU's offense ranked Top-50 nationally this past season in: Points per game (39th at 79.1), FG percentage (24th), assists (7th) and assists per game (10th).

NKU led the Horizon League in scoring, assists, three-point percentage, two-point percentage and overall field-goal percentage.

The Norse offensive tempo ranked 143rd nationally (KenPom) compared to UC rankings of 338, 330, 330, 333, 339 and 328 over the last six seasons.

Brannen understands the importance of having multiple shooters on the court at the same time and how spacing makes for good offense.

NKU was the Horizon League's best three-point-shooting team (37.3 percent), averaging 8.9 three-point shots made per game.

Defense: On defense, Brannen has built NKU into a quality full-court press team. His use of the press has increased each season as he's recruited to his style, from pressing less than 5.0 percent of the time in his first season to 17.8 percent this past season.

The Norse lock down the perimeter: No. 34 nationally in three-point defense, holding opponents to just 31.3 percent.

Toughness: NKU works the glass, ranking 46th, 62nd and 49th nationally in rebounding margin over the last three seasons.

Recruiting: Brannen has recruited the region and is from the area, having graduated from Newport Central Catholic.

Brannen has successfully recruited in the SEC as an associate head coach and at the mid-major levell as a head coach.

As associate head coach at Alabama, he helped landed the nation’s No. 5 recruiting class in 2011 and the No. 21-ranked recruiting class in 2014.

As associate head coach at VCU he helped land a 2007 recruiting class ranked in the Top-20 nationally. Brannen followed that up with a 2008 class that comprised the starting five of VCU’s memorable Final Four run in 2011.

NKU junior Dantez Walton was an AP All-State first-team selection for Ohio as a HS senior in 2016. Freshman Trevon Faulkner (Harrodsburg, KY) won 2018 Kentucky Mr. Basketball.

Brannen has also played the ever evolving transfer game. He brought in Tyler Sharpe, who began his career as a walk-on at Louisville. Sharpe scored 14.4 points and hit 38.3 percent from three-point range this past season. He also added senior guard Zaynah Robinson (6.9 points, 38.3 3pt percentage) as a grad transfer from Norfolk State.

Development of players: His players get better. Jalen Tate had a breakout season for the Norse, jumping from 5.7 points, 47.0 field goal percentage and 21.4 three-point percentage as a freshman to 13.7 points, 53.9 field goal percentage and 40.7 three-point percentage as a sophomore.

how many of us were super excited when uc named Tony Yates as the head coach and then watched that program crumble? when UC named Bob Huggiins as the head coach, I was furious because I wanted UC to name a big named high profile coach. How were we to know the legacy he left behind at UC? I remember fans freaking out when Cronin was named coach and he brought UC out of the ashes. I'm going to sit back and enjoy the ride. Who knows? Maybe Coach Brannen does greater things than Huggins, Kennedy and Cronin did. Give him a chance.
He worked wonders at NKU.

RE: 56-43
The things many of us have complained about with Cronin are some of Brannen's greatest strengths. Sounds like we are going to see a faster tempo, recruits who can shoot, and an embrace of the grad transfer market. For those of us who were ready for change, Coach Brannen could end up being a breath of fresh air.

RE: 56-43
We don't need two threads to discuss Brannen. I tried to merge the threads, but the system appears to be having issues. I'm locking this one.
