RE: 2019 MBB Dinner
Dane Fischer was introduced at the dinner but did not give a speech. Both Milon and Pierce gave their senior speeches...No indication where they are transferring to based on their speeches tonight.

This is correct and Luke Ford has handled it in the past. Level of giving is not the criteria but MBB season ticketholders get the second mailing. This criteria was set by the donor who helps fund the banquet.

By the look of Luke Ford twitter’s page he won’t be running it going forward. All W&M mentions are gone.

I’d be shocked if any W&M basketball player wasn’t in attendance, both transfer portal and non transfer portal. All of these fine young men bleed W&M through and through. Reading this warms my heart even further, the fact Justin and Matt spoke. Whether they, or any others stay or transfer, I believe speaks volumes to how much these players love W&M basketball and family!

All of us go back and forth on this board, and certainly have speculated which players would/wouldn’t attend the banquet, and somehow that would give us all a “read” on who liked/dislike Shaver and who’d transfer and who’d stay.

But kudos to all the players tonight. They’re United! While they’re still young, they proved they’re class acts. Perhaps class above us all. For through this turmoil they showed what “family means” while all of us bicker back and forth. Bottom line, thank you Men’s Basketball for giving at least this W&M fan a great piece of mind! God bless all of you!!!!

Jay Colley acted as MC.

All current players were in attendance along with Luke Ford, Coach Boatner and Coach Fischer plus AD Huge and 3 of her family members.

The senior players plus graduating juniors spoke giving emotional, thoughtful and humorous comments along with sharing a commitment to always support Tribe MBB and the love they have for their teammates.

Our players showed maturity well beyond their young age and wonderful class.

I don't think that he was referring to "We are the Champions".

I wasn’t in attendance, but this is what I heard as well. Tremendous grace and class from our team members that spoke. I hope all of us step back from cynical views we’ve had about this team and enjoy the grace and class they displayed tonight!!! They all bleed green and gold!!!!

RE: 2019 MBB Dinner
Some info gleamed from a wonderful, emotional basketball dinner last evening:

*Julian Boatner is part of the new basketball staff
*Paul Rowley is discussing with Coach Fischer about a graduate student assistant coach position next season
*Both Justin and Matt had decided, and advised the basketball staff, to transfer after their graduation long before Tony was let go

I hope you realize what you just posted, and the ramifications of same.

Which other players had decided to transfer before Tony was let go? Was the staff aware? More importantly, was the AD aware (you know my view on that)?

With this information now out in the open, it is clear that 2019-2020 was being blown up “behind the scenes”.

This firing was only partially about the Dance. With the transfer “turmoil”, there was an opportunity here to change coaches, and the opportunity was taken.

What folks are slowly coming to realize is that, under the new transfer portal rules, transfer turmoil is becoming a way of life at all schools, adding incredible stress to coaching staffs and probably AD’s.

Finally, from the perspective of a financial supporter of Tribe athletics, how do I reconcile my belief, and my dollars, building towards 2019-2020 when, behind the scenes, that belief and expectation were being dismantled. This ... is ... a .... major .... problem ... for schools like William and Mary who, under the new transfer rules, combined with summer school and smart student athletes, will have a problem “getting old” to field excellent teams to compete for championships.

You're saying that Huge was encouraging players to transfer to create the opportunity to fire Shaver?

Good observations by N J Alum! The new portal system is going to redefine recruiting and how to build a team. Texas Tech run to the Final four probably never happens without the Grad transfers they added.

There are now four recruiting paths:

One and done for the P5 big boys
Four year players who commit and stay
Transfers who play multiple years (like Cohn) after waiting a year
Grad transfers that are one and done

It will be interesting to see if the current proposal to require a grad transfer to get a diploma the summer after his last season or the school forfeits a scholarship for the next season gets passed as that could impact the number who try this option. Here is the link:
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/04/sport...sfers.html

Dane appears to be a very genuine person who clearly understands the challenges and has the best interest of our student athletics first on the agenda. He could use our support.

No.

I’m petulant, but I’m not that imaginative.

Wow, where did you come up with that? That’s akin to saying that our government doesn’t spy on people!

And Holmes, the guy picked to run the program temporarily after the bloodletting, and the guy that all of the “transfers” thanked, is out?

Sadly that would be the assumption. What we do not know is it was offered or not to him. It would be a tough position for both coaches but a good way to plug the leaking dyke.

Forgot to add that, despite his seemingly emotional farewell speech, Matt told several people at his table that he is still undecided about transferring. Don't know what that's about, but could it be the pot of gold at the end of the transfer route may not be as appealing as he believed. Perhaps the offers aren't exactly flooding in.

Thanks Bubba. Good to finally see a fact about a few of the transfer intentions, after all of our conjecture (mine very much included). Surprised to not see more chatter on the board after you dropped that bomb - perhaps just because it’s Saturday. Challenges what seems to have been the majority opinion - and certainly minimizes the magnitude of negative outcomes many of us felt were associated with Shaver’s firing.
