UTA having a higher RPI than App is just a tad confusing.

App being ranked 2nd in the conference is a very nice surprise for a team that was picked to be at the bottom.

Confrtence standings don't play a part of RPI. It's a strictly mathematical cslculation based on your won/loss (25%), your opponents won/loss (50%), and your opponents/ opponents won/loss records (25%) with some bonuses or penalties thrown in based on good or bad wins/losses.

When you add 15 wins and 93 losses [(5-31) *3] to your OWP, you will most definitely hurt.

UTA has played an extremely tough schedule up to this point, and has gotten some fantastic wins. That's why they are so high with a losing record.

They've beaten #19 Oklahoma State, #26 Arkansas, #60 Baylor (twice), and won the series over a #59 North Texas.

If you use the Team Sheets link and look at the differences between the two teams, you will see why UTA is ranked higher. UTA is page 90, App State is page 97.

Appalachian State has played the weaker teams in the conference so far. With Louisiana, Troy, Texas-Arlington and Coastal Carolina to close the season, we'll get a pretty good idea of how much they have improved. At least they'll finish higher than South Alabama, Georgia State and ULM.
