How many "almosts" did ODU have before they won?

2018: Finished 2nd.
2017: Finished 3rd.
2016: Finished 4th.
2015: Finished 3rd.

ODU had an almost dynasty until they didn't.

I love how all the WKU fans talk about JJ always blowing it and never winning the conference. AND winning one does not erase the shortfalls of any previous seasons. But for all the JJ trashing from you guys how many titles has WKU won since joining CUSA?

We've got a couple of football titles.

BTW I did not really mean that as a slam on ODU, merely pointing out that teams often flirt with a championship for quite a while before they actually win one.

It's probably more common for a team to be good for a few years and then finally break through than it is for a team to come from being bad to winning a championship in a single year.

Understood. Up until last year, you could say a good chunk of fans on the boards wanted JJ gone, despite never finishing worse than 5th in the conference. That is the fear many have with Jones: good enough not to get fired, but not good enough to bring home championships.

RE: CUSA Basketball Transfers
Rice is getting a 6-10 post from Texas Tech (Malik Ondigo) as a true transfer (sit out a year, two years of eligibility after that). He didn't play a ton for Tech in his two years (18 games last year of mostly limited action) but he's a 3 star recruit out of high school so I suspect he'll get plenty of playing time at Rice for his final two years. That should do it for 2019-20. We lost just one freshman from last year, which in this day and age is about as good as you can hope for.

To make things unnecessarily confusing, I only added transfers who were announced this off-season. Dunno if that was the right call.

I mean, they're in the 2019 class. So they should be included.

The addition of Keonte Kennedy will give UTEP three guards that were all rated at 4* guys coming out of high school. All three are big guards as well, measuring 6'4"-6'6"

RE: CUSA Basketball Transfers
Welp. Three more defections from WKU since this was last updated. Incoming recruit Ongenda is gone, reserve forward Nelson is gone, and now Tolu Smith is gone.

None of these guys would have been starters but the depth is hurt a little bit particularly with Smith. He will be a star somewhere else and he would have been our starting center in '20-21.

Thanks for bumping it, even with bad news. I'll update when I'm at a computer again.

Any other news from other teams since this was last updated?

In the case of Ongenda he was kind of poached by an assistant that left.

Who really knows but you could make an argument that all of these guys transferred because of their perceived (lack of) playing time this coming season. None of the main 7 or 8 guys that will be in the rotation has left. That gives me hope that it is not really a systematic problem so much as it is just kids doing what they feel is best for them.

I would love to hear that argument? Western has one player over 6'7 and the 6'7 (most likely shorter than that) is a lightly recruited Fr that most fans wasn't predicting very many minute...3 weeks ago. Smith is a kid Stansbury has gushed about being a steal, since he signed him.

This team has 2 former OVC players and 2 former Horizon League players..all 4 (if the NCAA rules in favor of Cooper) expecting 15 or more minutes a game. So one thing is for sure water cooler talk on recruiting rankings is useless. Or these players are leaving for other reasons. It's hard to use the excuse "they were recruited over" when Western is playing with 7 to 10 players the last few years.

In 3 years Western has had 23 players to transfer or only avg 1 year of basketball at Western. That list includes GTs. I believe 4, of those were 4 star recruits.

23 player and a total of 22.5 years of basketball

TOBIAS HOWARD 1
DAMARI PARRIS 1
Marty Leahy .5
JUNIOR LOMOMBA 1 (GT)
PANCAKE THOMAS 1 (GT)
QUE JOHNSON 1 (GT)
LAMONTE BEARDEN 1.5
Marko Stajkovski .5
Darius Thompson 1 (GT)
Dwight Coleby 1 (GT)
Jake Ohmer 2
Marek Nelson 2
Moustapha Diagne 1.5
Dalano Banton 1
DeSean Murray .5 (GT)
Matt Horton 1
CAMRON JUSTICE 1 (GT)
KENNY COOPER 1 (Sr)
Mitchell Robinson 0
Trevelin Queen 0
Jordan Brangers 0
Nick Ongenda 0
Tolu Smith 1

Smith expected Bassey to go to the NBA and then he didn't. He would have been settling for Bassey's scraps this year. You or I can see that he was the heir apparent for next year... but a 19 year old may not see it that way. From his perspective... what if Bassey came back again? Then he would have wasted a year of eligibility riding the pine when there are hundreds of D1 schools he could start for now.

Nelson plays a similar role as Anderson or Williams but is not as good as either of those players.

Banton was not really a point guard and likely would have lost a lot of minutes to Cooper and Rawls. He might could play the three, but we are loaded at that position.

Diagne and Horton had no chance at much floor time this year. At the time they transferred they were fighting to be the third option behind Bassey and Smith.

Ohmer... please. He wasn't going to sniff the floor this year unless we were up 30.

As I said none of the players that were starting at the end of last year have transferred. If there were some larger problem wouldn't some of those core players have left?

And PS... our best team of this century was 2008. Our big man that year was Matt Maresca. Nothing against Matt but Charles Bassey he was not.
