OT: A look at Rice's residential college assignment process
Today's Thresher has an interesting article about a topic that I have never seen covered in print: how students are assigned to the residential colleges.

There are probably no great surprises, but it's a neat little peak behind the curtain.

The Sorting Hat: A closer look at the residential college selection process

Thanks -- that IS something I've always wondered about...

The system works. I was placed in Hanszen College with another freshman archi, Robert Taylor. We became roommates in our sophomore year and eventually business partners. This December we will celebrate 40 years in business together.

So true.
My brother preceded me at Lovett. I always wondered if it was random or a legacy placement.

Odd, that. It was my impression that everyone at Lovett tried to spend as much time away from Lovett as possible.

Actually, being inside Lovett gives you the best vantage point for NOT being able to see any giant toasters.

Which reminds me: Two famous towers in Paris are the Eiffel, which is beautiful, and the Montparnasse, which is hideous. One little bit of tourism advice I've heard is that the Montparnasse is actually the one you should visit the top of, because from there, the Eiffel Tower is in your view, and the Montparnasse is not.

(An outstanding but less-known vantage point is the roof of the Arc de Triomphe. It's not all that tall, but it's tall enough, centrally located, and has the advantage of providing a completely open-air, unobstructed view.)

I don't know that Montparnasse is truly hideous, but it definitely doesn't fit. It would look okay in downtown Manhattan (the big apple, not the little one). It might actually be an improvement there. But as the only thing that big for miles around, it sticks out like a sore thumb, literally. It just does not work where it is.
