Rob Lanier hits all the check marks. Dont get comfortable, this guy is gone in 2 years.

-highly regarded reputation as a brilliant Xs and Os tactician
-superb recruiter who signed some serious talents for Florida, Tennessee, Texas, etc.
-proven veteran coach who made his living in power conferences
-respected name in coaching brotherhood
-connections to NBA circles
-pedigree under Billy Donovan and Rick Barnes

Looks primed and ready for this job. On paper-- a home run. Impressive hire especially given his roots in Buffalo; job open and their recent success.

Georgia State: 1 Buffalo: 0

Also, Rob Lanier's son is the star PG for a basketball powerhouse HS in Tennessee. Another potential father/son magic at Georgia State? Stay tuned. He has the shooting skills of RJ Hunter and the slashing ability of Dmarcus Simonds.

Does Georgia State just plaster RJ Hunter's face on all their recruiting materials?

RE: Georgia State Men's Basketball Coaching Search
Rob Lanier was introduced as our basketball coach just now.

- he wasnt looking to be a head coach, but Mark Becker and Charlie Cobb sold him on the vision for GSU athletics. Over the years, he turned down head coach opportunities. He wasnt going to accept lame duck coaching jobs where the university was happy to accept status-quo and wouldn't match his energy and plans for the program. About 15mins in, Lanier knew he wanted the Georgia State job. Wish I knew what they discussed. Some detailed plans about the new basketball arena perhaps?
- he is familiar with some coaches in the league like Bob Marlin and Chris Ogden. He shared a story about how Chris Ogden was arrested streaking naked across the campus lol.
- he emphasized bringing back size to GSU. He wants our roster to go big.
- man-to-man defense will be installed. Wants to dominate the backcourt.
- Offense will be more fluid and flexible. Back when he was a young head coach at 28, he forced things too much with complicated schemes to prove that he is smart as advertised and learned his lesson from that. He learned under Rick Barnes and grew as a coach.
- he doesnt want to compare his GSU team to other teams in the SBC. He is hungrier and the goal is higher for himself.
- things are going to be different. He will expect highest standards that the players will have to adopt. Little worried when he said that those who cant adapt to his way of doing things will be encouraged to move on..whatever this means. All the players were present and there are no talks of transfers so far.

Idk about all that, but I'll be happy with recruiting some true bigs and competing righting away in a totally new scheme.

I have a strange feeling that Lanier is going to take GSU further than Ron Hunter did.
