I thought it was a good day when Roby stepped down as AD and when his replacement was named I listened to and loved Konya's enthusiasm. He seemed to be the polar opposite of Roby.
Since I have a lot of time on my hands I just went on the Oakland message boards to see how lucky we were to land him and I was really surprised to see all of the mixed reviews.
On one hand he was an AD of the year but one poster described their NEW AD as in heririting a department that was an "empty shell" and one that had previously worked using "smoke and mirrors."
Konya came in promising Division one hockey hockey but nothing ever came of that...same with the promised dedicated weight room, practice facility or film room. A poster described him as "The greatest salesman in the world" but nothing changed with the Oakland attendence problem.
Posters described him as ambitious...which is a good thing. He seems to be moving steadily upward and I've always said that I would rather have a great coach (or AD) for five years who then leaves us to move up rather than a loyal bad coach or AD for a longer time.
We have some great coaches right now. Men's and womans hockey.....and men's and women's basketball. College athletics is full of ambitious ADS anxious to put their stamp on a program and then move up. All I'm saying is don't screw up the good thing we've got going before you move on.

RE: konya
Jeff is leaving NU to become AD at San Jose State.
Tough loss and it happened kind of quickly.
Let's hope Men's head hockey coach Jim Madigan gets the job and his top assistant Jerry Keefe becomes the new HC. That would be my choice in this.

RE: konya
That was the first thought I had. I wonder if Jim would be interested.

I definitely think he’s interested.

Interesting. I didn't know San Jose St would be considered a better job. I don't hear very much about them in any sport but it must be.
I thought Madigan if/when the AD job opened up but wonder if he still wants to coach and feels like there is unfinished business on the ice. He seems like the logical lead candidate though.

Yes, that's why I wonder. If Jim's goal was to bring NU hockey back to about where it was under Fernie then he's done that. If his goal is higher....trips to the Frozen Four and maybe a magical year when everything goes right with a national championship then then that's still out there. Looking at our team now with a potential top goalie and a loaded pipeline of talent I imagine that it would be hard to walk away.

RE: konya
San Jose State has football and they play in the Mountain West Conference with UNLV, Boise State, Utah State, Air Force, San Diego State, Nevada, etc, a much better and bigger league.
I also think Jeff did everything he could to get us out of the CAA into a better league. But his hands were tied. So no need to stay.
Jim has accomplished the most any NU hockey coach has ever done in a 5 year period IMO. The only blemish is not winning NCAA Tourney games (which other current HC's have failed to do as of now). Jerry Keefe is always rumored or been requested for head coaching positions every off-season. I think he's quietly been the NU head coach-in-waiting, so this ensures he becomes that.
We'll see what direction NU decides to go for the position...

Hearing on twitter that Madigan is getting the job. Great for him and the school. I would expect this won't affect incoming players to the hockey team, assuming we mostly stay in house with coaching movement.
