Hit the ball or die trying... how many were K's looking with a runner on 3rd? If there were fewer of those I'd almost call it progress.

The number of called strikeouts looking this year has been at a woefully unacceptable level. You would think Bragga would have corrected this by now.

Look it up yourself. I was at the first 3 of those games.

Also, there's no correlation between strikeouts and wins in this year's stats.

That's why I say, if they're swinging strikeouts, that's progress.

So I looked it up myself ... and Frizzy Owl, not Walt, is correct. But Walt is close.

Tonight is the 2nd game this year in which 15 or more Owls struck out. The other game was the first UC-Irvine game (17 Ks).

Two games have seen 14 Rice strikeouts, however. (The 2nd Rhode Island game and 1st Texas State contest.) So tonight is the fourth time that the Owls have had 14 or more Ks.

So I looked this up, too.

The Owls overall record is 10-18 (.357)

When Rice struck out 11 or more times, their record is 4-8 (.333) ... slightly worse.

When Owl batters struck out 7 or fewer times, their record is 3-5 (.375) ... slightly better. (For 8 or fewer, it's 4-6 (.400); 9 or fewer, 5-7 (.417).)

So while there may not be a strong correlation, it doesn't seem correct to say "there's no correlation."

(Although it is true that we're 1-0 when 19 strike out. :-) )

You find a better correlation if you look at total outs, not just strikeouts.

Rice is 6-0 when recording 24 or fewer.
4-16 when recording more than that.
(1-2) when 30+

Some really small sample sizes there.

RE: Rice v. ODU Friday Game
We are now up to 270th in fielding. Which is still horrible, but a significant improvement from a few weeks ago.

We are no longer leading the nation in errors either.
