RE: College Football Attendance Averages for 2018:
After admitting that both Clemson and Va Tech were down last year, CBS Sports made this odd statement:

Quote:The ACC was the only Power Five conference whose average attendance increased in 2018.

https://www.cbssports.com/college-footba...-22-years/

NOTE: they do not present any data to support that statement.

Florida State knocked the ACC in the head last year. Their drop in average was in the thousands due to a lousy season. The conference as a whole was only down a fraction. Had it not been for F.S.U.'s anomalous season you might well have been the only one that was up. Clemson was on the tube literally every week. That's an issue on non key game weeks when fans take a break from actually going. Alabama suffers from the same.

A note of interest: When I was researching PAC numbers the same newspaper that gave me the ones I posted (since the PAC gave no statistical data) had also run an article illustrating that the PAC numbers were actually significantly inflated. It just made me wonder how bad they really were which is why I said when actual statistical data comes out I'd be interested in making a more accurate report on them. The SEC, Big 10, Big 12, and ACC numbers all came from statistical data bases. You had just done the work so I credited you.

RE: College Football Attendance Averages for 2018:
It is about what is expected. A couple of surprises though.

Miami at #3 in the ACC @ 61,000+ is comparatively good. They had a reputation for struggling in attendance when they were not playing big names at home.

Kansas @ 16,000 is quite dismal. That is way more a FCS-type figure. While it is a fb program with routine loses, losing season after losing season, they are a flagship school. KSU averages close to 50,000.

While PAC12 figures are not outstanding, they have the tightest range among the schools.

Miami was responsible for keeping the ACC's figures up. Virginia Tech and Florida State lost several thousand each in attendance vs a year ago. The 2017 thread is still pinned. It's interesting to compare the year over year. The biggest losses in the PAC were due to USC.

I can't cast stones because I only made it up for one game, but it is disappointing that UK dropped a little compared to 2017 considering the team we fielded. We do great about filling the place up for SEC games, but those non-conference ones are a tough sell to all but die-hard fans. I think replicating the suites design on the south side of the stadium on the north side and building it over several thousand of those north side upper deck seats would be a good move. Those seats rarely sell except huge games, and the wine and cheese crowd in and around Lexington that like the suites life just keeps growing.

What is amazing to me is USC and UCLA averaging 57,000 and 55,000 respectively.

I have to wonder if the NFL returning to LA has had anything to do with the attendance decline?

Of course, the biggest problem they have is mediocre play, but I think there might be some local football fans that would rather spend their money on the pros.

USC and UCLA usually have very decently ranked recruiting classes. In pre-season polls, often both are ranked in the top 25, sometimes quite high. While polling can be influenced by the traditional, prominent names, success expectations get overstated time after time. It ain't the 1970s.
Remember, not that long ago, sports media would claim USC has the team of the decade, or even the century, and didn't even win the PAC12?
Stable and successful coaching has been an issue at both places. UCLA and USC get big attendance figures when winning ways happen.

Some SEC and BIG schools draw very well even during mediocre seasons. Not those PAC schools in Los Angeles and elsewhere.
