“I just wanted a long-term deal,” Hunter told The Athletic on Sunday. “So that’s on them. We could’ve had this thing done. I think they’re a little embarrassed right now, to be honest with you.”
"Hunter had one year left on his contract. Yes, one. He approached Georgia State officials about a long-term extension after last year’s second NCAA Tournament bid but was rejected."
“Generally in our business, if you have less than four years on your deal, you better be worried about getting fired,” Hunter said. “I had a conversation with Charlie, and he said, ‘We’ll get back to you with some details.’ I wanted to get going on it. I never even asked for (specific) money. I just wanted a long-term deal. I love Georgia State. When I went to them after the tournament last year, I just wanted a deal where I could retire here.”
Hunter again on negotiations: “I said to them, ‘Just give me something.’ That was in November. My agent’s phone calls weren’t even being returned after a certain point. So I don’t want to get into that.”
"He[Hunter] said he went to athletics director Charlie Cobb after the 2017-18 season to ask for an extension. One never came. He said it got to the point in the fall when “my agent’s calls weren’t even being returned.”
“I don’t know how we got to this point. I really don’t,” he said. If the school gave him a long-term deal after last season when the Panthers made it to their second NCAA Tournament, would he have left? “No,” he [Hunter] said.
To the GSU administration: If you've always been a skinny nerd that doesn't have a ton of luck with the ladies, when you realize a smart, beautiful girl wants to marry you, you find the cash to put a ring on her finger.
Will say... a good coach getting blown out in the final game while being distracted with fumbled contract negotiations/Tulane offer sure sounds familiar...

Long story short, the Hunter family loves Atlanta and GSU. The plan was for him to retire at GSU and go into TV (likely TNT). If Cobb had even marginally sat down and worked out a deal that was not a slap in the face then we would not be having this conversation. But this is Cobb all day long. Bryan McClendon who went to Mays HS in Atlanta, interviewed here and walked out of the interview thinking he had the job. Cobb said , new, and hired his buddyy.
So we actually found a unicorn? He sounds like the type of guy that doesn't actively sell schools down the river.
4-27 may have been worth it after all.
Yes, yes, and yes. Y'all got a really good one that is going to do a ton for the Tulane community. Go ahead and start supporting Samaratin's Feet and accept the fact that you'll never see man to man now.
When I first heard the rumor's that Hunter was being considered for the Tulane Job, my initial reaction was, "Well, looks like the guy's opted to get paid."
Then I heard that Ga St didn't even extend the man an offer, and I thought, "Wait! That can't be right."
Then I heard that the most successful basketball coach in your program's history was being (essentially) run off by a small, spiteful, petty AD with No Vision. And I thought, "That can't even be in the realm of possibility." "I mean, no AD could be that Stupid."
And then the name Larry Teis flashed through my mind . . .
soooo uuuhhhh, never mind . . . ..

This has me scratching my head. Not sure what in the hell Ga State admin is thinking. Let's face it. Hunter thrives off of transfers from bigger programs. I am envious. He can get players from major programs, meld them with recruits, and consistently get 20+ wins. Do they expect Gonzaga? The south is football country and the SBC is a one bid league.
Will be interesting to see if he can pull off the transfers to Tulane that he did at Ga State.

Gillin's had to replace basically every coach Cobb hired. There was a reason we struggled in most sports when we first came into the league.
Yes you have...
And now that NCSU would not go for the okey doke we are stuck.

What happened with NCSU? Sorry if this is common knowledge and I’m behind.

sounds like uta all over again. run off a successful well liked coach who made the most of what he had to work with and make all the fans and donors mad for a while.
