That is a very good core to form a new conference. I think FIU and FAU would definitely come with us. If so that would put us at 7. The next best two options would be So Miss/UAB to get to 9 teams. AT MOST we would only want to go to a total of 10 football teams. Even if those 4 chose not to come, I would still like the see the Frustated Five leave and form a new conference. I don't care who the other teams are as long as they are in the Eastern time zone and relatively close to other conference mates.

Potential new candidates that would actually consider coming with in no particular order.....

Let FIU go back to the Sunbelt. We don’t need two Miami schools.

UTEP, UTSA, Rice, North Texas help start up a new Southwest Conference.

We add Appalachian State, Georgia Southern and/or Liberty/UMass. I say Liberty.

That’s a friggin tight conference. The new CUSA.

Southern Miss should realize that things are beyond recovery, and just drop football.
It's coming, anyway.
Why keep fighting? Game over.

USM has no desire to associate with 85% of the schools listed.

Agree. Aren't most of y'alls alumni in Louisiana and Texas? I know that's the case with Louisiana Tech. I wouldn't think that they'd be interested in most of those schools either.

The majority of the stuff on the inside is probably run by our conference, and not the Frisco folks.

I am sure the Western schools are not going to start a new conference and lose their automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

If the dissatisfied Eastern schools want to break away, go ahead and do so, but it will be a new conference.

The much more practical step would be to reform the AAC, Belt and CUSA into regional conferences. However, that kind of move seems to be beyond the leadership of these schools. They like to maintain their half step perception advantage of AAC over CUSA and CUSA over the Belt.

As an aside, there is not one team in CUSA that doesn't desire to move up. There is also not one team in CUSA that is above the level of conference competition.

Depends on what we mean by a half-step. On a hypothetical G5/P5 scale, the AAC is definitely still closer to the G5 side than they are to the P5 end.

Without question. What should happen (probably won't) is the SunBelt and CUSA get together and split the teams up geographically. That is 26 schools and "if" you add Mew Mexico State and Liberty you have 28.

RE: Looks like USM, UAB, and the FUs like Frisco
So UNT gets home court advantage for another few seasons. Their fans didn't shatter the noise meter this tournament, but UNT is starting to play better basketball and before you know it, Frisco will be a sea of green and a true home court advantage. For a while ODU had to endure the noise and smell of a certain fanbase to make it to the dance, but not having our fans in Frisco as we did in Richmond has had a negative effect.

I have an idea, have watch parties at each campus arena, set up a big screen, mic up the crowd and play it through the Frisco speaker system. Maybe use those big screens to show the fans who couldn't make it. There you go. Fans can chant for their team and the players will hear it hundreds of miles away (with maybe a slight delay) Problem solved. lol

I don't have time to sit down and figure out what the best fit would be for all these schools geographically, but I really just don't like having 14 teams in a conference. We've seen it here in C-USA where we might play someone in the other division once every three years in football. That just doesn't work if you really wanna build rivalries.

Conferences should be no bigger than ten schools so that everyone plays everyone every year in football, with room for 3 OOC games. At least that's my opinion. So I'd actually prefer a split into 3 conferences of about 9 schools each.

I agree 10 schools would be perfect, but nobody is willing to give up their automatic bid. The above layout works geographically. The big issue would be NCAA Credits....Marshall, ODU, MTSU, and UAB EARNED them, but I doubt the other CUSA Schools would be willing to let them have it all.

Why couldn't there be 33 automatic bids for the NCAA Tournament? The number of schools with D1 basketball programs is bound to increase over time eventually anyway, as they already have. For that matter, the number of conferences and the number of teams admitted into the NCAA Tournament has grown over the years also. In the early 80's, it was still only a 48-team tournament.

I wish Marshall would go back to the MAC. Ideally EMU would drop out and Marshall would take their spot, but I’d also be ok with bringing WKU with us to make 14.

This is where it's all headed, in some form, but we'll most likely be stuck with one another until the BIG12 and AAC futures are decided. ECU, Tulsa, Tulane, and SMU will probably be thrown into that mix.

It can but there is a waiting period for new conferences. I don't remember exactly what it is but it is something like 2 years (4 years?). So for that period you would have to earn an at large to get a tournament bid. Otherwise no bid and no money. It is a pretty big deterrent to forming new conferences.
