Another interesting note from interview with @Ourand_SBJ is role ESPN likely has/will play in any future expansion of P5 league and I agree with John- that network seems to not want any expansion and since they are writing checks it likely means things stay the same for a while

That's why they gave us a huge % raise on a long contract. They don't want movement.

Few interesting nuggets from @Ourand_SBJ interview with @AustinRLyon on @thebeatofsports on AAC new media deal: John says about 40% of football games and a lot of basketball games likely to ESPN+...$ increases over years. So the $7M per is years down road...

Just a grain of salt here.
This can't be true and we signed a 1 billion 12 year deal. Math means things.
So perhaps we get 4 million a year, than 6 million a year, than 7 million a year, than 8 million, otherwise its 7 million a year. In which case the graduated payments mean we just sold our rights for less than they are worth, and locked in a long term deal that won't pay us our current worth till maybe half way through, and will be horrible at the end.

Then at no point will this deal reach the value of the conference viewership and will start 2 million less than what most business journals projected for the conference.

Lets restructure Aresco's contract. Pay him 10% of what each school makes on average from it's media rights deal. So if the average per school is 7 mil a year, he gets paid 700k a year. I bet he starts negotiating his ass off then.

RE: New AAC Media Deal Announced
The one concern with the gradual increase and backloading the contract is that by the time we finally get up to $7mil/yr... the conference could blow up. So the amount we're getting up until 2024 might not be all that much and then if conference expansion hits and a couple brands leave... it resets the conference back down and we never see the higher ends of the contract.

Yeah, he didn't know the specs., but said deals typically escalate 5% a year. He guessed mid 60s to 100 by the end.
ETA: $7M is the avg, not the contract end year amount.

The hobo in my basement was the prime negotiator. He said he took a bunch of night classes at San Jacinto college.

Maybe... I’m too scared to go ask what his name is. As long as i toss a case of beer down there every once in a while he stays happy.

RE: New AAC Media Deal Announced
I am starting to get on the side of the skeptics here. If the aim for ESPN is to build the ESPN+ brand around AAC content, then the AAC should absolutely have a bigger payout. If AAC is your marquee content, then a healthy share of revenues from ESPN+ that is above and beyond the $7 million.
However, we still don't have one media source independently confirming Ourand's article. And with something like this, one would expect journalists to be pounding the pavement to confirm it. I would also point out that Ourand's article doesn't really have a ton of details.
I want to see when the deal is actually announced what the details are.

That's cool that you have a basement in Houston. My old house you would have hit the water table.

IIRC, it was a pretty even split between ABC/ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU games and NEWS/CBSSN/ESPN3. So, maybe 10% or so more on ESPN linear channel games...spitballing here as I'm going from memory. Also, I didn't realize it, but we get ESPN+ through a mag. subscription on of my kiddos got as a Christmas gift. I know this person didn't pay $50 for it.

Is this not concerning to anyone? That we may not actually ever see a good chunk of this money?
