OT: Troy to build 15,000 sq. ft. research facility
Big news on the academic side... Troy received a $3.2-million grant from the National Institute of Science & Technology, on top of money received from the state/federal governments, to build a 15,000 sq. ft. research facility on on the Troy campus.

It will initially specialize in plastics research, and expand from there. It will also pave the way for Troy to start offering research-based graduate degrees and emphasize STEM programs in the future.

Troy is not a research institution. This is a step in the right direction.

What mainly stands out is that it's being partly paid for by a grant. I think it's awesome that institutions like the NIST want to invest in Troy's academics. That's a testament to Troy's commitment to growth more than anything else. It might not be a big facility, but it will lead to better things later on.

Georgia Southern just broke ground on an engineering research facility paid for by the state which will help support the growth of the Savannah Port. I'm sure the State of Alabama has something similar in mind for Troy.

Research prospective players? Surely this isn’t wasted on academics.

So glad I wasn't the only one who thought that.

Don't get me wrong, I applaud any new buildings (specifically on the academics side), and to be fair, I have no frame of reference either... But that was my first thought.

Glad to hear it for Troy though.

The SIER building is 229,000 square feet and cost $125 million, excluding gorgeous landscaping and re-creation of an adjacent quad. There is a classroom wing, but the majority of the building is research. And it's amazing in every way. I've walked through it. This building is why we recently added our 4th and 5th faculty who are members of the national academies and crossed the $100 million in annual research expenditures last year. This building helps solidify UTA as R1 and will enable us to reach next year the State of Texas' threshold for re-classification from "emerging research university" to "research university" along with increased funding that comes with it.

The SIER building forms an impressive southern gateway to the campus. It also extends the built campus down to a pretty creek that runs along the southern edge of the campus core. It's pretty much a dream building. Other universities who are after something similar are visiting the SIER. Princeton is among the visitors.

Pretty cool building @UTA. I work for a FAANG company, and we have lots of researchers, so I know how important these facilities are overall...
